Palmetto Bay is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 34,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Palmetto Bay is located on a barrier island between the Everglades and Biscayne Bay. The name " Palmetto Bay" comes from a palmetto tree that stands nearby on the beach. The first European to sight the bay was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 during his journey from Cuba to Hispaniola, and he called it "Pallabatico". In 1898, Asa Key built a lighthouse here while he was serving as sheriff of Miami-Dade County. In 1916, American biologist J.B.Saunders published an article about plants of southwestern Florida in which he mentioned "Apalmatis lanatus", now known as "Apalmatis fascicularis". This planting represented one of Saunders's early efforts to study plant growth along ancient Indian trade routes through southwest Florida and into Alabama and Georgia. At that time there were no real roads or bridges connecting these areas so he had to hiking overland from his field work sites to get his samples back home to Fort Myers for further analysis and research.. In 1922, Key started downgrading the Coast Guard Station at Fonseca Bluff because it could not keep up with increasing fishing activity on the bayou bordering mainland Miami Beach; however, when commercial fishing became more important many people still supported Key's decision because they believed their catch would benefit both communities by providing jobs for local fishermen and selling additional seafood products directly to consumers outside of town limits. By 1933 there were only two men working at Fonseca Bluff - captain John Waddell (1922-2005) who manned the buoy tower until 1978; and second mate Alain Leduc (1910-1996), who also managed galley services until 1978 When Waddell retired in 1978 he was succeeded by First Mate/Captain Jeffery Ahern (1978-2001). Captain Ahern continued operations of Fonseca Bluff until its closure in 2001 due to lack of funding resulting from then current US Coast Guard regulations limiting lightedNMU vessels operating out of any port other than Miami Beach Harbor which effectively stopped all UFOT fishing opportunities south of Ft Myers Island Effective January 1st 2002 Onward Fishing opportunities are available off pier #2 just north Of Government Pier

Palmetto Bay is a small, barrier island located in the Gulf of Mexico about 30 miles south of Miami. The name comes from the palmetto trees that grow on the island. The first inhabitants of Palmetto Bay were Native Americans who lived near what is now Fort Lauderdale. They built their homes along the banks of the bayou and hunted and gathered around the bay. In 1835, Spanish settlers arrived in Palmetto Bay and began to cultivate some of the land around present-day Miami. They named their new settlement San Miguel de los Castros, after St. Michael, patron saint of Spain. By 1845, sugarcane had become an important crop on Palmetto Bay and many wealthy Spaniards established plantations there. In 1901, Panama Canal builders began construction on what would become known as the Panama Canal Zone and because it was within Spanish territory at that time, they called this part of Palmetto Bay "Panama City." In 1903, following a referendum by Panamanians living in Cuba and Puerto Rico regarding whether or not they should be allowed to vote for president, San Miguel de los Castros became an autonomous municipality within Panama City with its own government. This community thrived until World War II when most of Panamanian population fled to escape Nazi Germany's persecution during World War II. After 1945 much development took place in Panama City but little happened on San Miguel de los Castros which remained aisolated bastion of autonomy until 1991 when it became part of Panama City proper as part of its process for becoming fully integrated into modern day Peru through free elections.] The first Europeans to visit Palmetto Bay were Portuguese sailors who sailed past it in 1524 while searching for a route to India via Cuba. Captain João Fernandes da Silveira landed at San Miguel de los Castros on July 21st 1524 with his convoy seeking passage back home to Portugal via HavanaBay (present-day Boca Raton). He found no takers so he anchored off shore and sent ashore his men in order to trade goods with local Indians as well as capture any local animals they may have seen while ashore including dolphins which are thought to have been used as sacrificial animals by ancient Inca civilizations] In 1763 Lieutenant Colonel James Cook explored Florida's coast from Cape Canaveral northward along TampaBay before sailing southeastward towards St Augustine Harbor where he sighted Pensacola Island] It wasn't until 1768 when Englishman John Carter discovered Palm Beach County (then known as West Florida) through charts made by Don Pedro Menendez y Perez while exploring Mobile Bay] On January 2nd 1795 USS Constitution under Commodore George Dewey sail into Sarasota Harbor seeking purchase from King Carlos III OFSpainof two islands off Key Largo called Gracias a Dios (Gracias Godoy) from Juan Fernandez y Costilla Vaez which confused Ulysses S Grant because he mistook them for Islas Gracias A Dios [Isles Of Grace]. Although Discovery has never been confirmed this theory suggests that Palo Alto was one possible location for Buccaneers Roque Santa Cruz] The first permanent European settler in Palm Beach County was Nicholas Pope[who], having married Anna Maria DeSoto whose family came from South America,[anchored at Punta Gorda about mile east northeast shoreline abutting Indian River Lagoon
In 1821, the Palmetto Bay Campaign was fought in what is now Florida between United States forces and Spanish troops. The battle was part of the Seminole War. After a three-year campaign, including an engagement at Apalachicola River, U.S. General Andrew Jackson finally drove the Spaniards out of Florida in 1824.
