In 1916, General Pershing honored US Marines who had fought at Guadalcanal with a public dinner at which he awarded Medals of Honor to twelve Marines including Private First Class Charles Fenton Ransom (known as "the Snake" because of his participation in this battle). During World War II, Palmetto Bay played an important role in manufacturing munitions used by the United States military. In 1965, Hurricane Agnes destructive surge overwhelmed local levees and flooded most of downtown Palmetto Bay; however no lives were lost or injured as a result of the storm due to fortuitous preparations made by locals prior to landfall. The following year saw another major hurricane when Hugo smashed into southeastern Cubakilling more than fifty people and leaving dozens Of houses destroyed or damaged along with extensive damage to agricultural land across much of Cuban gulf coast communities affected by hurricanes Hugo & Irma combined
The Palmetto Bayou, which is a tributary of the Everglades, flows through the city of Miami. The area around Miami was originally inhabited by Arawakan Indians and later by Africans. The first English settlers in this area arrived in 1565 and began to clear land for plantations. In 1795, King Carlos III of Spain granted a charter to the Miami Company, which became the first Dutch company to settle in Florida. Captain John Smith founded what is now known as Fort Lauderdale on Palm Beach Island in 1795. By 1810, sugar cane had been discovered on the south side of the bayou and several mills were built along its course to process this valuable crop. In 1828, Cuban immigrants began arriving in large numbers and soon there were over 100 Spanish-language newspapers published in South Florida. This influx of new people led to social upheaval and political instability that contributed to white flight from Florida during the 1830s and 1840s. By 1845, only about 10 percent of Floridians were black compared with nearly 50 percent who were Hispanic or Portuguese American. After annexation by Mexico following Ulysses S Grant’s victory at Buena Vista Creek in 1846, Miami became part of Mexican America under President Polk’s administration as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. 1
