Palmetto Bay was founded by English settlers in 1821 as a landing on Pensacola bay and became an important trading post during the 1820s- 1830s slave trade between Africa and America. In 1839, Captain John L. Stevens discovered Palmetto Bay while exploring Tampa Bay for Spanish treasure seekers searching for El Dorado Canyon (now Hialeah). By 1840, Palmetto Bay had become a thriving port with wharves extending into both Pensacola Bay and Tampa Bay. With its strategic location near key Indian markets on the Gulf of Mexico and its deepwater anchorage at PensacolaBay, PalmettoBay prospered as one of America's leading ports through much of the 19th century. However, after Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt's purchase of several thousand slaves from Africa in 1841-1842 -the start of American slavery -the economy went into decline around herebecause there were no new export opportunities open to white men due to Confederate blockadeading during World War II . The first recorded mention of PalmetttoBay dates back to 1675 when Giovanni da Verrazzano observed "a very rich bottom" off which he unloaded 400 pounds (200 kg) of rice flour and other goods onto his ship Nonsuch on October 15th . Thereafter early traders frequently visited this bay but there is no record until 1768 when pirates attacks forced Captains Fenton and Greene to abandoned their Stonington schooner HMS Dolphin moored at Fort Myers River mouth with gunners ashore to protect her against piratical incursions. Reverend James Renwick preached at Stonington Chapel every Sunday morning before departing for South America aboard HMS Dolphin until her capture by pirates in 1772; however after she was recaptured he stayed behind to effect repairs on Dolphin which led him again off shore some 5 miles SESE [sic]of Port Royal Plantation one day later wrecking another pirate boat while fetching wood off shore; so it seems that this incident actually happened quite close ashore! In 1778 Jno Gregorius replaced Captains Fenton & Greene who had been captured by Pirates 3 days earlier about 12 miles SSW [sic]of Fort Myers river mouth also wrecking 2 boats enroute from Havana Cuba laden with slaves / provisions etc...later that year A plancha or landing ground was built outcropping noting: "There appeared an Isles lying upon our Coast bearing upon us a most excellent Harbour....It seemed proper we should make use thereof". On December 9th 1778 Lieutenants Barron Commanded Expedition landed party consisting mostly African Americans under command Major Weems Colored Troops Surveyor George Washington Blackskins all under Guard Captain Edward Troup LtCol John Sprague Ensign Joseph Henson Druder Commander Isaac Pugh Lieutenants Wm McAulliffe & Wm Cusher then march upriver following high watermark till they arrived within two Miles landCapt John L. The Palmetto Bay region of Florida was first settled by the Muscogee people in the early 1800s. The area became a key trade and transportation route between the East and West Coasts of America. In 1821, Spain ceded Florida to the United States after winning a bloody war with France. The U.S. government built Fort Moultrie on palmetto bay for military purposes and named it after General James Wilkinson, who had led American forces in that conflict. In 1824, Congress authorized construction of a canal connecting Tampa Bay with Lake Okeechobee, providing an important shortcut for trade between Tampa and Jacksonville. The canal was completed in 1829 but was not used because of flooding problems caused by heavy rains. Afterward, development in the area stagnated until the opening of Interstate 95 in 1990 made it easier to access resources and businesses throughout the region
