Grant near Vicksburg, many residents of Palm Beach fled to Fort Myers for refuge; some returned when hostilities ended six months later. Many of these refugees would settle down in what is now Palmetto Bay and become its permanent residents over time – many of whom still reside there today. During World War II much ofFort Myers was destroyed bybombing raids; however most structures were salvaged and rebuilt before rejoining society as post-apocalyptic ruins known as "The Mosh Pit." The only structure remaining from this era is the old Post Office which still stands at 227 N US Highway 1st Street - just off US Highway 1 between Jensen Road and Ocean Parkway - accessible via appointment only from inside or outside Fort Myers Today's Palmetto Bay community began its growth following Reconstructionist nonprofit organizations such as Habitat for Humanity which opened new homes in various phases throughout the 1970s; followed by other private developers who renovated existing dwellings until becoming self-sufficient with their own kitchens and living spaces throughout the 1990s As more people moved into Palmetto Bay (and surrounding areas) crime rates went up but eventually began to decline due to better police technology and increased public safety precautions like DUI checkpoints which have been located here since 2003 buffered communities against highcrime rates like those found in other major metropolises aroundthe nation As recently as 2009 Crime statistics here were lower than any city within Broward County

In 1811, Spanish explorer Captain Juan Pablo de Galvez discovered land to the south and east of what is now Tampa Bay. He named it Santa Clara de la Florida after his patron saint, San Clara. In 1855, three years after Galvez's discovery, the United States acquired Pensacola Bay from Spain as part of the Treaty of Paris following Napoleon's failed French expedition against Mexico. The U.S. built Fort Taylor on present-day Clearwater Beach to protect Pensacola Bay from British ships and traders entering or exiting through Mobile Bay. The fort served as a military base until 1898 when it was destroyed by a fire that began in a munitions depot adjacent to the fortifications. In 1906, Congress designated Palmetto Bay as an international fishing ground because its resources were so valuable for both commercial fishing and recreational boating. From its creation until 1959, Palmetto Bay also served as headquarters for America's International Longshoremen's Association (ALPA). Today, much of what is now PalmettoBay was developed during this time including Clearwater Beach and Tarpon Springs whereFort Taylor once stood

In 1845, Spain ceded Florida to America, and development in the area began quickly. By 1850, citrus farming had become an important industry in this region, and saw growth in both production and trade. The area saw its peak during World War II as a result of military activity and shipbuilding activity in the bay. After the war, many businesses died out or were taken over by others, but citrus production continued to be a significant aspect of this region's economy until around 2000.
