The Seminoles selected Palmettoland as their new home because it offered them more land than any other location within South Carolina available for acquisition. The town was named after Major General James Wilkinson III who played an important role in helping lead American forces against Native American resistance duringthe Creek War (1813-1814). The town grew quickly due to its position near both state roads and shipping lanes that made it easy for traders to reach it. By 1860, there were 1,500 residents living in Palmettoland proper while another 3,000 lived scattered around the surrounding countryside. By 1870, palmettoland had become an important center for goods transport along U S Route 1a highway that ran through southeastern Florida at that time; today it remains one of only a few places still accessible by car or bike! In 1907 Floridas main railroad line became available throughPalmettoland when Jacksonville Railway Company extended its track southward from Jacksonville Junction!
