Palmetto Bay was first settled in the area by Seminole Indians in the early 1800s. The original inhabitants of Palmetto Bay were the Muskogee Indians. In 1821, Spanish traders discovered and landed on Palmetto Bay, and began to trade with the natives. By 1830, the town of Pensacola had been founded on what is now Mail Street in downtown Pensacola. In 1836, General José Félix de la Vega y Costilla called for a volunteer battalion to suppress Seminole uprisings in Florida. After enlisting a group of men from Palmetto Bay, de la Vega set out from Pensacola with his force. He arrived at Fort Tocobaga on June 15th, 1836 and began his march northward into Seminole country. When he arrived at a creek called Cypress Creek, he learned that some of his men had fallen ill and needed medical attention. De la Vega abandoned his march and returned home to Pensacola before continuing his campaign against the Seminoles another year. On January 1st, 1840, Spain ceded Florida to United States after winning a war with Spain over Cuba. On November 15th of that year, Florida became part of the United States following its purchase from Spain by President James K Polk under Article II of the Treaty of Paris ending the Mexican-American War (1846-48). On December 4th 1850, Congress passed an act authorizing Colonel Aimee Smedley Butler to take possession of all land east of Stonington River withinFlorida as part as compensation for land taken by Mexico during their war for Independence (1846-48). colonel Butler took possessionof all this land on December 5th 1850
The Palmetto Bayou system was once a major waterway in Florida. The bayou drained the eastern and central parts of the state, as well as sections of Alabama and Mississippi. It also flowed into the Gulf of Mexico.
