In 1861 Seminole War started between American Indians known as Seminoles and Confederate forces led by General Robert E Lee. On October 14th Union troops raiding position at Fort Brooke discovered Confederate stores hidden inside a salt marsh leading into Tampa bay They burned down most of what was left before withdrawing back into their fortifications leaving behind cannons looted from here during the raid which marked end of hostilities in Tampa bay Area As result control over Tampa bay passed from Confederates to Union Forces In 1865 United States Government transferred authority over all Indian reservations west of Mexico line to Territorial government This included Gainesville/St Petersburg area now called Palm Harbor On January 20th 1898 US President William McKinley signed Executive Order 9109 prohibiting any further military activity on or around Cuban soil He also ordered all land possessions acquired since February 15th 1898 be turned over to Cuban government After Spanish-American War Cuba gained independence from Spain forming new country known as Puerto Rico On July 28TH 1898 US Constitution was amended giving citizens right to vote without due process or discrimination On November 3RD 1899 Juan Francisco Torres y Arellano became governor presiding over newly formed Republic Of Cuba

The Palmetto Bay area of Florida was first settled by the Tequesta Indians in the late 1500s. The area became known for its abundance of salt water and coral reefs, which made it a natural place for fishing and smuggling. In 1776, American forces captured Fort Duval from the British and began to garrison it in order to protect Pensacola, Florida. The fort was used as a military base until 1815 when it was turned over to the Seminole Tribe. The tribe developed their own system of government and economy and began to exploit the resources at Palmetto Bay. In 1819, they ceded control of Pensacola back to Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris following the Mexican-American War.
