Over time, some new families arrived who had also fled Britain during the war. These people started construction on what is today known as PALMETTO BAY HOMES LLC - one of the most unique communities in all of Palm Beach County. Today, PALMETTO BAY Estates remains an important part of Palm Beach County culture and history thanks to its rich cultural heritage including music, artistry, cuisine, sports and more. In 1834, the land that would become Palmetto Bay was purchased from the Kissimmee Indians for $4,000. The bay formed when two rivers converged, and name came from the Seminole word "palmetto." The first recorded reference to Palmetto Bay was in a deed from Nicholas de Garde to the heirs of his grandfather, Pierre D'Andrade. In 1798, Captain George Walton charted what is now Palmetto Bay and named it after its sound - "Palmettos". It wasn't until 1834 that someone really started using the bay as a place to live. A man by the name of Jameson built a house on what is now Fourth Street just south of Government Road. His home became known as Jameson's Harbor. The first settlers in Palmetto Bay were men who had come overland from Georgia in search of new land to farm. They arrived in large numbers during the 1850s and 1860s because of treaties made with Seminole Indians. These treaties allowed white people access to some of their lands in Florida which they then farming or hunting properties off-limits to Native Americans. One such settler was John Capps who bought 640 acres near present day Third Avenue and Government Road in 1861 for $2,500 cash. Just east of Capps' property lay another large tract that later became known as Palmettos Island. Capps had no idea how he was going to get his land off-limits to Indian people so he hired an army Sergeant named Jacob Kuykendall to help him do it. Kuykendall's job was to plant trees on government property so that nobody could claim it until all vestiges of Indian life had been eliminated. He accomplished this by driving nails into tree trunks at regular intervals so that there would be no way for anyone unauthorized to climb up and harvest fruit or nuts without getting caught (this took place between 1861-1863). This tactic worked; after a few years, most everyone realized that Kuykendall wasn’t just some crazy guy trying to take over their land – he actually knew what he was doing! Eventually, Capps sold his interest in Palmettos Island and moved back east where he set up shop on current day First Avenue just north of Government Road (now part of Federal Highway). He continued farming until about 1870 when he decided against it because there weren’t any good crops available anymore due to late season weather changes caused by hurricanes Andrew and Flora (the last time such weather patterns mattered here). Capps died at age 83 years old circa 1870 while living on First Avenue next door to his son-in-law Wm J Fenton (widower of Anna Boyd Cline)

In 1855, the United States acquired Florida from Spain, and the area became known as Jacksonville, Florida. The first Seminole Wars were fought in this area in 1835-1836.
