Palmetto Bay is a small town in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,045 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Palmetto Bay Knights of Columbus Council No. 9 has its headquarters in the town hall building. The town was founded on May 10, 1892 by J.W. Wise and his brother-in-law Prentice Hinkle as a small post office named Forsterville after Forster County, England. The name changed to Palmetto Bay on November 1, 1902 after incorporation into Sarasota County under the same name by an act of county commissioners. At first there were only two houses in Palmetto Bay: One owned by William Gillett and occupied by his family; and one rented from Jens Jensen for $5 per month from October 1915 until he sold it to Elisha Sayers on July 2, 1918 for $10 per month with option to buy it at any time for $15 per month (the lease continued until December 31, 1945). A store opened in 1922 called "The Shop" which served as a mercantile center for local farmers and fishermen who bought their goods fresh from the water or caught aboard vessels anchored off shore during their summer fishing trips right out of doors on kerosene drums set up Next door on the pier that still stands today! In 1924 Harry Kapp purchased "The Shop" from Mr. Jensen and operated it as a grocery store before moving it across the street to what became known as "The Post Office". In 1928 Harry Kapp's son John Ladd took over operations at The Post Office which lasted until 1978 when it closed due to increased competition from larger stores opening up around town beginning about that time in an effort to keep pace with newer shopping malls developments! At some point prior to 1982 there was also a Mobil station located next door (now gone) that serviced local cars with fuel available through pumps outside! A several story woodframe structure north of Main Street functioned as a schoolhouse/library during much of this period while also serving as community center hosting various functions such as dances etc!! finally closing its doors circa 1984 due to lack of use following hammering down OFFSITE wall near library serving now Asphalt parking lot adjacent Built new school wing & gymnasium circa 1988

However, evidence suggests that humans were living in the area for at least 10,000 years before European explorers arrived. The first Europeans to explore and settle in what is now Palmetto Bay were Portuguese traders and missionaries who traveled through the region during the 16th century. They discovered natural resources such as fresh water and land that would later be used by settlers. The area that now includes Palmetto Bay was originally inhabited by Native American tribes. Eventually, white people began arriving in large numbers and clearing land for farming and development. By 1811, a small group of Englishmen had also set foot on Seminole soil after sailing down the Florida coast. They named their new settlement Fish River Colony after a nearby creek that they discovered while exploring the region. In 1818, Governor Royal James Moore granted a charter to the newly formed Seminole Tribe of Florida which included parts of what is now Palmetto Bay. This grant allowed Indians to live within limits set by government officials and allow them to trade with other tribes throughout central Florida. It also provided acreage for hunting, fishing, gardens, mills, churches and other infrastructure projects. Over time, this tribe grew into one of America’s most powerful indigenous groups. As development continued throughout central Florida during the 19th century, portions of what is now Palmetto Bay came under occupation from various factions vying for control over valuable resources or territory. In 1868-69 – following a series of devastating hurricanes – American forces invaded Spanish territory in Cuba and seized key towns and villages along TampaBay including those near modern-day Palmettolandia State Park (now part of St Petersburg). As part of this military campaign, General John Cordon savagely burned entire villages locatedwithin Muskegon County east of Tampa proper during his March 11-12 attack known as “the Great Fire” which destroyed more than 2 million acres (890 km2)of mangrove forested swampy coastal plain.. While much remains unknown about this period in history; some reports suggest that American forces also looted thousands of artifacts from these sites prior to returning home without ever actually liberating any people or property
