The history of binoculars in Palmetto Bay, Florida dates back to the 1800s. early explorers and fishermen used binoculars to see far away objects while fishing or examining coral reefs. By the 1920s, many people in the area had acquiredbinoculars for personal use. In the 1930s, Palmetto Bay was home to a large concentration of military installations and their personnel used binoculars for field reconnaissance purposes. In 1939, a group of amateur astronomers from Florida assembled at Fort Myers Beach to improve optics for telescope observation. They came up with the idea of creating a "binocular club" so that they could share their insights and experiences with one another. The first meeting was held on October 12th, 1939 and was attended by about 30 people from across Florida. After some initial trials and errors, they formulated a constitution for their club which included rules on membership dues, observing times, and other concerns pertaining to watching astronomical events from within our state boundaries. From then on it became an important resource for amateur astronomers throughout central Florida! Since its inception, Binoculous has grown into an important resource for both amateur astronomers and professionals alike! With generous donations from individuals and organizations like NASA Ames Research Center (NASA), Binoculous has continued to make contributions towards advancing astronomy education in our region!
