It is part of the Palm Beach–West Palm Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Palm Coast was founded by Captain John Palmes in 1795 as "Pelican's Bay" on the east coast of present-daybrevard county. In 1811, it was renamed to "Fort George Washington." Fort George Washington served as a military post until 1836 and then as a trading post until 1840. The fortifications were destroyed by fire in 1868 and are now gone from sight. The area that would become Palm Coast was settled by European Americans during the mid 1800s for sugar cane farming and citrus growing. A post office called Flagler had been established in 1838, but it closed due to lack of mail service between Melbourne and Fort Myers. In 1839, Benjamin Hendrickson erected a log cabin on what is now known as Indian Road near the intersection of Government Cutoff (SR 613) and SR 516A (now US 1). He named it Fort Hendrickson after his father-in-law, Colonel James Purdy Hendrickson, who had also fought in Florida against Seminoles during the War of1812. In 1841, Congressman James Kapp organized a group of men to survey land for development around Flagler Harbor onBrevard County's central coast.. On July 8th they recorded their plat at what is now Indian Road/Flagler Boulevard which included all that would later become Palm Coast including: majority parcel located at present day Ft Pierce Rd & I-95; minority parcel located NW corner of Estero Blvd & SR 613; several parcels located NE corner of Redington Ave & SR 613; one parcel located SW corner of Estero Blvd & State Rd 765; two parcels located NW corner of Estero Blvd & State Rd 766; one parcel located NW corner OF Redington Ave & SR 613). This plat became known as the Flagler Purchase or Flagler Ranch because it encompassed most or all that would later be developed within present day Palm Coast boundaries! This purchase led to increased interest in developing this area because its potential for agriculture, commerce and new homes set it apart from other areas along this central coastline where development occurred primarily through fishing and shipping activities! By 1850 there were over 100 residents living in Flagler Ranch when Captain Jno Palmes arrived with his family from England on November 12th seeking passage across America via Key West aboard USS Constitution under Ulysses S Grant’s command! After reaching St Augustine he resold his holdings back to Palmes' family members who returned home before sailing back across America again….. This trip marked an important milestone not only for American naval officers traveling through Florida waters but also for British subjects looking forward to experiencing American life outside London!! PALME FOUNDATIONS - At approximately 10am local time on Sunday October 15th 1865 Captain John Palmes discovered coconuts while walking towards Spanish Harbour about 9 miles south west (or northwest)ofpresent day downtown palm coast
