The area that now includes Palm Coast was first settled by Spanish colonists in the 17th century. In 1836, palm oil smugglers from Cuba used this region to launder their profits and abandon their smuggling operations on Sumatra and Java. The name "Pinecrest" was given to this area by two surveyors who found a range of pine trees in what is now Cocoa Beach Township but no coconut palms.
In 1888, John D'Arcy Fenton bought some land east of downtown for $1,000 and named it Pinecrest after his home country of Ireland. A year later he donated an acre (0.40 km²) for each resident to build a summer home or clubhouse if they could find one within three months’ notice. By 1912 there were over 100 homes in Pinecrest with an additional 150 members living abroad or visiting during the summer season; many residents rented out their homes while they lived elsewhere in south Florida or visited Europe during the winter season).
In 1916 Congressman James Moseley proposed legislation creating a park on 10 acres (4 ha) northeast of downtown which would become known as Pinecrest Park after Fenton's donation. The park eventually became Coral Gables and has since been one of Miami-Dade County's most popular areas for recreation and tourism ever since its establishment.
