As part of this deal, Britain granted Santa Catalina to Manuel Keyes, governor of Cuba revenues from that territory at that time. In 1821, Keyes sold Santa Catalina back to Spain in order to gain compensation for lost revenue from Cuba during the Mexican–American War (1846–48). In 1851, following American annexation of Mexico and Cuban independence from Spain, Havana became one of several U.S.-occupied naval bases in Cuba under Commander-in-Chief Edward Everett Smith's administration when he took office as First Lady Governorof Florida on January 20th., 1850
