The area that is now Palm Coast was first settled in the late 1800s by Europeans. The name "Palm Coast" comes from the palm trees that were common in the area. At one time, there were over a thousand palm trees in this area. In 1889, Florida statehood was granted to the United States, and Palm Coast became part of the new state. The population of Palm Coast grew rapidly during this time, and by 1917 it had reached 2,500 people. By 1920, the population had grown to 5,000 people, and by 1930 it had increased to 10,000 people. In 1933, Congress passed a bill named after Admiral John McCain (1881-1937), who had been killed in World War I. This bill provided for financial support for military veterans and their families. By 1935, the population of Palm Coast had reached 15,000 people. During World War II, Palm Coast played an important role in military operations as it was one of several areas where troop concentrations were made up relatively close to major naval bases. After the war ended however, much of what remained of this community vanished as developers began buying land around Naval Station Key West and established resorts there
