The population was 16,753 as of 2010. Palm Coast is a census-designated place (CDP) that covers an area of 1 square mile (2 km²). The CDP has a total population of 11,715 as of 2010. The town began to form around 1887 when two brothers named George and John Fenton bought 640 acres (248 ha) at what is now Gulf Breeze Boulevard and Gulfstream Avenue from J.B. Morse for $8 per acre ($40 per ha). They built a small cabin known as "The Gables" which served as their home until 1895 when they sold it to J.D. Spaulding for $800 dollars ($4 million today). In 1898 Spaulding developed what became known as Palm Coast into a resort town with gambling casinos, mangroves, tennis courts, race tracks, and other recreational amenities for visitors who came to purchase land or invest in businesses such as sugar cane plantations or citrus fruit farms. In 1903 Palm Coast acquired its first post office which functioned from 1903-1907 before being moved to Miami in 1907 due to concerns about fire safety in swampy areas near Miami Beach at that time. In 1912 Palm Coast annexed neighboring unincorporated territory called Belleair after purchasing it from Mrs. Belleair for $3 per acre ($10 per ha). The name "Belleair" comes from an early settler's daughter who bore him four children; one son died young while serving in World War I; three daughters married residents of Belleair: Alice Bryant who became Mrs.; Lillie Lewis who became Mrs.; and Florence Ballard who became Mrs., all of whom remain residents today and continuedoihing operations at Belleair Park Golf Course & Spa Resort which are registered with the US government under the name "Belleairs". The annexation created a new post office called Fort Myers Beach because Fort Myers had been closed down due to budget cuts during World War I but no mail arrived so officials realized that another community could be established there if they could just find someone interested in buying property within minutes after it was advertised! After some searching they found Hana Kukuiyanui (a Hawaiian girl) who purchased 5 acres (.22 km²) adjacent to her childhood home at Pahoa Kaiakohe on Maui island for $5 per acre ($10 per ha), making her one of the few people everto have owned property contiguous with both Honolulu and Palm Harbor cities limits! She kept possession of this land until she sold it back unto Hawaii government in 1959 prior to annexation by Hawaii proper!. The community was first developed in the early 1800s as a means to trade with thejabaldawas and other Native American groups. The town initially consisted of only a few homes and a small detachment of military personnel. By the mid-19th century, however, Palm Coast had become an important stop on the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. In 1892, the town became part of Hillsborough County and was renamed palm coast after its resort-like environment. A number of new businesses were brought to Palm Coast during this time, including a hotel and several stores. By World War I, however, palm coast had started to decline as mills closed down and fishing began to take over as the town's main source of income. During this time, many people from elsewhere in Hillsborough County moved into palm coast and began to develop it into an English speaking center for southern Hillsborough County. However, by World War II, palm coast again experienced a decline in population due to warfare and economic conditions within the area. However, thanks to efforts by local officials such as Mayor Harry O'Neill (1922-2004), who managed to keep Palm Coast economically active through various initiatives such as marketing programs and tax collection efforts,Palm Coast rebounded during this time period.
