It was in 1912 that the first binoculars were invented. They were made by a man named Samuel Morse and they consisted of two lenses, one on the front and one on the back. Gadsden developed a design for a water-resistant and comfortable telescope mount that would allow users to view objects up close without having to carry around a large instrument. This new invention led to the creation of the first local optical store in Palm Coast, which was called The Gadsden Store. by 1895, there were over 20 businesses focused on selling optical products in Palm Coast. By 1924, The Gadsden Store had become known as The Optical Shop & Warehouse and was one of the largest retailers in town. In 1937, Joplin Glass Works opened its doors in downtown Palm Coast and began producing high quality windows and mirrors for homes and businesses. This began an era where glass production played an important role in downtown Palm Coast’s economy. During World War II, The Optical Shop & Warehouse became one of the first businesses to rise up against rationing implemented by the government. They voluntarily produced goods that were not affected by rationing and continued to sell optics until 1945 when they closed their doors due to economic reasons. In 1951, Stonington Glass Works opened their doors on Market Street next door to The Optical Shop & Warehouse; this company would eventually become known as Stonington Glass Company Limited (SGC). SGC produced high quality windows and mirrors until 1978 when they closed their doors due to financial reasons after many years of producing top-quality window products for both residential and commercial customers throughout palm coast area
palm coast is a city located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Combined Statistical Area. Palm Coast is home to the University of West Florida and several major corporations such as Lockheed Martin and JDS Uniphase. The area has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years and has evidence of human activity dating back to Paleo-Indian times. In 1821, Spanish traders explored the area and named it La Palma de Santa María for Governor Manuel de Santa Maria y Costilla. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Palm Coast was made by Captain John Smith on July 14, 1795 when he landed on Pensacola Beach from HMS Endeavour with his supplies and men searching for a new route to India. He named this place "Cape Canaveral." American explorer Andrew Jackson located Coconino Key on December 1, 1824 while exploring northwest Florida. This key was later renamed Jacksonville after General James FentonJackson who served as Mayor of Jacksonville from 1827-1829. In 1826, A Seminole man killed two white farmers near present day Cocoa Beach while hunting deer; his victim's wife took revenge by burning down her husband's plantation near present day Pensacola beach where he had landed his ship before setting out for St Augustine with some 50 other colonists including Major George Rogers Clark (1783-1846) during the exploration of Southwest Florida which began in 1824 led by Lieutenant Colonel James Ketchum (1786-1854). After landing at Daytona Beach in February 1789 underCaptain Richard Eaton Gilbert Stuart(1768-1835), they continued south along Indian River until reaching Islamorada Creek on March 3rd where they built Fort Supply with stores brought over from Saint Augustine two days earlier aboard HMS Discovery during Russian Admiral Eudoxus Putnik's Expedition against American vessels off Tampa Bay Squadron 9 November 1789/12 December 1789.(Eaton Gilbert Stuart discovered St Augustine about 4 miles east of Fort Supply) On Easter Sunday 1800igator Jobe Allen died leading an expedition northeast across Everglades country composed mostly of Muscovy Warthog hunts northward into Live Oak Hammock Preserve then downriver to Katrine Prairie Wildlife Preserve near Gainesville.) After the war ended, Palm Coast slowly diminished in population until it reached its current levels by 2000. Today, palm coast is a vibrant community that offers a variety of amenities such as beaches, shopping malls, restaurants and diners. The economy is based largely on tourism which has led to increased employment opportunities for local residents and businesses. The townsfolk are also dedicated to preserving their heritage through events such as historical re-enactments or art exhibitions.
The Palm Coast area is located on the east coast of Florida and was first used as a place to live by the Kissimmee tribe in the early 1900s. After they were pushed out of their home, they began to settle here. In 1907, citrus crops were started in this area and it became an important citrus production center. By 1940, palm oil had become a major industry in this region.
