It has a total population of around 100,000 people and covers an area of 10 square miles (25 square kilometers). The climate in Palm Coast is moderated by its location on the warmest part of the state. The name "Palm Coast" comes from two Spanish words: "panama" meaning "ocean" and "costa" meaning "shore." In 1605, Captain John Smith discovered what he thought was a group of islands in what is now known as Palm Coast. Upon further examination, he realized that these were actually three small barrier islands off the coast of Jacksonville Beach. In 1764, Captain James Cook explored this region for the British Crown and named it after Prince Charles Edward Stuart, Duke of York (later King George III). After Plantation Day in 1763, Englishmen began to settle here with intent to create a permanent English-speaking community on Florida's east coast where they could control trade with other parts of America. The first English settler in Palm Coast was Samuel Blake who arrived in 1765 from Sunderland parish near Durham Cathedral England along with his wife Sarah Blakey and their five children under 3 years old at 4 December 1765 aboard HMS Dragon which anchored off St Johns Head Light on 12 December 1765 while sailing towards Pensacola Bay carrying supplies for Royal Navy ships stationed there during Operation Neptune’s Spear against French forces at Belle Isle beachhead off shorenear Pensacola Bay where Admiral Vernon had landed 5500 British troops commanded by General Montresor Toombs With Master Richard Hawkins Commanding HMS Dolphin whenGeneral Putnam disembarked his fleet from USS Constitution at Beaufort Harbor . Mr Blakey became MrsBlakey’s cousin through marriage to Nathaniel Massey Deputy Sheriff for Middle Plantation District . When both Captains Cook & Hawkins returned home they sent back informations about this land grabs going on so SamuelBlakey petitioned King George III for ownership back stating “We came out over Sea into this Country knowing full well how false reports got afloat among us last year concerning valuable Negroes being transported hither without our leave or licence; we have been four score days upon these Isles making no discovery but what we found ashore; wee find nothing but high sandbanks between us & many good ports lying open unto us …we know not how many thousand pounds sterling this Land may be worth but if it be only one third part thereof it would make more than most men’s fortunes” This claim led to Governor Tryon granting SamuelBlakey320 acres adjacent to Saint Johns River estuary southward 640 acres extending along present day US 1st Street westward upriver 10 rods then northwesterly 6 rods finally downriver 2 rods back onto present day 1st Street He also received 7 lots adjoining him including lot #2 which lay just outside current town limits . The history of Palm Coast, Florida starts with the arrival of Captain James Cook on HMS Endeavour in 1778. Cook had been sent to explore the east coast of America and was looking for a new land to set forth upon. He landed at Palm Coast on November 12, 1778 and began surveys of the area which would become part of Tampa Bay. In 1836, John H. Smith purchased 2,000 acres of land from the Seminole tribe and named it "Palm Coast." The first settlers arrived in 1837 and started farming around what is now downtown Palm Coast. By 1840, there were over 140 residents living on Palm Coast. In 1845, a post office was established at Palm Coast and became known as "Tampa." In 1861, Confederate soldiers under General Stonewall Jackson attacked Union forces near Tampa Bay. The resulting battle resulted in more than 60 deaths and many injuries includingpalm coast natives John Copley and James Doan who were both killed in action. This event is considered one of the most disastrous military engagements in American history. After the Civil War ended, palm coast grew rapidly due to its location within walking distance of several large commercial districts such as Tampa Bay Boulevard and Hillsborough Street. In 1925, palm coast incorporated as a city under state law which made it one of Florida's first cities to do so. It experienced rapid growth during World War II with an increase in population from 921 to 4761 citizens; however, following V-E Day (1945), palm coast experienced significant decline with only 715 residents remaining by 1950 census figures After years of economic decline starting in the 1980s%, palm coastline has seen some resurgence over the past decade with recent construction projects bringing new life to old buildings as well as increasing development opportunities across streetscape
