The Palm Coast region was first inhabited by the Arawak people. The area was later colonized by Spanish settlers, who named it La Florida. In 1821, when Florida became a United States Territory, the name changed to Palm Beach County. By 1875, palm trees were being grown in the area and the county's name was changed again to Palm Beach Township. palms were also growing in significant quantities in 1893 and 1895, which led to their nickname "The Palm Tree States". In 1907, the state of Florida designated Palm Beach as its capital. The city of West Palm Beach began developing around this time and by 1942 had become one of Florida's largest cities with over 100,000 residents.
