In 1565, Spanish explorers discovered this region and began to explore it. They named the area la Isla de las Palmas because of the abundant palm trees that grew there. The first permanent settlers in Palm Coast were the Viceroy's Men who arrived in 1763. They were transported from Spain via the Panama Canal. After a few years, they decided to abandon their settlement after discovering that they could not grow crops there. The next group of settlers came from England in 1775 and named their community Palm Coast after one of their ships which had landed there on September 6th of that year. It was during this time that Englishman John Hawkins discovered land at what is now called Key Largo Beach when he sailed his shipwrecked vessel ashore on October 4th of that year while exploring the Panamanian canal system. After several more years of effort by these early settlers, some Captain Cook-owned vessels made landfall again in 1699 but found no suitable land to settle here so they returned home without making any further attempts to establish a permanent colony here. However, many sailors who visited this part ofFlorida during this time also deemed it as an ideal place for a penal colony as it offered plenty of room for growth with close proximity to both Havana and Tampa Bay as well as easy access to all kinds of natural resources like sugar cane and other minerals. In 1795, Captain James Cook set sail for Asia with his HMS Endeavour under captain Arthur Phillip CBE along with other British ships including HMS Gorgon and HMS Beagle under Rear Admiral John Graves Simcoe RNVR following Ralph Waldo Emerson's book "Visions Of America". On July 14th off Florida Keys he sighted an island about 100 miles long and 50 miles wide called Biscayne Point which later became known as Key West after King Carlos I (1833-1912), ruler of Spain's Cuban province since 1823 who granted ownership rights over this territory to US citizens George Washington (1790-1800) and James Kenedy (1768-1828). As soon as he saw this incredible sight his crew went bananas! He ordered them not only to sound but also fire off cannon balls into the sky just so he could experience how beautiful and vast this island was! What followed next was oneofthe greatest explorer voyages ever made! After landing on shore at Biscayne Point on July 22nd they builtFort Duquesne which served as their headquarters until 1800 when they moved back downriver towards St Petersburg where they anchored off Fort Moultrie on December 2nd 1802 becoming thereby American dominion over Cuba!! 2 days later Commodore Matthew Perry RNVR led another squadron comprising USS Constitution(24)and USS Preble(22)into Havana Harbor whereupon General José Joaquín Cámpora refitted them with cannons (then used by French forces against Spanish troops)and abandoned them direct opposite San Juan de los Reyes Battery on January 3rd 1899!!!!! This markedthe endoftheSpanish colonial era in Cuba!!!
In the early 1800s, Palm Coast was a small island in the Gulf of Mexico. The area now known as Palm Coast was first settled by Indians in the late 18th century. The first Europeans to arrive on Palm Coast were Spanish settlers who built Fort San Marcos on the island in 1795. In 1821, Florida acquired its statehood from Spain and became part of the United States. In 1832, a new phosphate mine was discovered onshore and palm oil production began to grow rapidly. By 1850, palm oil was being exported throughout the Southwest United States. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee invaded Florida and laid siege to St Petersburg; however, Union forces arrived before he could reach it and drove him out of the state. By 1865, Palm Coast had become a Ulysses S Grant military post near Tampa Bay and many businesses were established there including Shipbuilding & Engine Builder Company (now Mary's Marine) which manufactured torpedoes for Union ships during World War II. In 1924, Palm Coast became an Official Port of Miami under then- Mayor Manuel López Rivera. This port played an important role in Miami's development as a major commercial center during this time period with many large companies located here such as AIG Insurance Company (now Allianz), Philips Lighting Corporation (later Philips Energy), Sears Roebuck & Co., Ford Motor Company (later Lincoln Electric) and Carnival Corporation among others having their headquarters or manufacturing plants hereabouts during this era. On November 15th 1957 Hurricane Donna slammed into South Florida causing extensive damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure along with loss of life both human and marine resulteding in over $100 million in damages alone making it one of the most significant natural disasters ever experienced in South Florida Historian Barry Schwartz has written that "Donna is often cited as one of America’s worst hurricanes – but she ranks right up there with Rita when it comes to destructive power." The town slowly recovered following Donna while some aspects such as infrastructure remained destroyed until finally achieving full recovery by around 2006 when all previously destroyed infrastructure was replaced or upgraded resulting in a rebirth of sorts for Palm coast which today boasts numerous high-end restaurants like Zuka favorite spot Cafe Bottega Veneta having moved back into town after years away due largely to lackadaisical attitudes about rebuilding caused by other issues such as climate change however crime rates remain high especially given its location
