palm beach gardens, florida history and culture - palm beach gardens is a city located in Palm Beach County, Florida. The city was founded in 1896 by Major General William M. Sherman as part of the Fort Pierce Reservation. In 1916, the United States Congress annexed Palm Beach Gardens and other nearby towns to form the City of Palm Beach. On July 26, 1927, the first day of the month, Palm Beach Gardens became an incorporated municipality under the jurisdiction of Broward County. The area that would become Palm Beach Gardens was originally called Indian Wells Springs because it was close to a springs that yielded water so clear that visitors could see reflections off its surface. The name Indian Wells Springs likely came from two Native American words: "inihi" meaning "spring," and "weasels" because they were used to catch fish at this location. By 1853, when Robert Hite bought land along Clearwater Creek for development into what would become Palm Beach Gardens, he had already named his property “Indian Wells Springs” after these two wordsakes. In 1894, Major General William M Sherman granted permission for one hundred families to settle on Fort Pierce Reservation within what would eventually become Palm Beach Gardens. These settlers were primarily European-American Yankees who had come overland from New York City or Boston looking for a chance to escape bossy Mayor Melville Webster's regulations in their cities back home (New York Cityans were only allowed five months leave each year). Many of these new arrivals also brought with them their own individual cultures and religions which clashed immediately with those on Fort Pierce Reservation where most residents still lived according to traditional Native American beliefs about nature and shamanism (the use of natural objects such as feathers or roots as mediums through which spiritual energy passed). This tension led to fistfights between European Americans and Native Americans often ending with one side retreating back into their homes while the other fought until either side ran out of ammunition or died from injuries sustained during combat; both sides claimed victory even though no real physical damage was done. Hite's developers did not want this conflict continuing so they decided instead to rename Fort Pierce Reservoir after then-President Grover Cleveland in order create an image that all people living near him should share—that is if anyone wanted national recognition for their community (Cleveland never actually visited Fort Pierce).
