The name "Palm Beach Gardens" was given to the town by John D. Rockefeller and his son Frederick C. Harkness on October 2, 1912 when they purchased land adjacent to the now-demolished Biltmore Estate in what is now downtown Palm Beach Gardens from Leland Stanford Jr., founder of Stanford University. Rockefeller had been interested in buying land in Jacksonville, Florida since he bought some land there during his electrolyte business days in 1901. He passed up opportunities to buy more land in Jacksonville because he felt that it would only be used for military purposes or development as an airport due to its isolation from other towns and cities then existing in Florida. Rockefeller decided instead to purchase a slice of property adjacent to Biltmore Estate where he would build his first private home called "Rockefeller Manor". The initial plan was for him and his wife Edith (1910-1976) to have four homes – one each for their childrens: Winthrop Rockefeller (1920-2001), John D . Rockefeller Jr.(1925-2009), Katherine Hepburn (1927-2005) – but this plan fell through because Mrs. Harkness became pregnant again soon after her husband's death from a heart attack on February 12, 1913 while on vacation with fellow Vanderbilt benefactor James Vanderbilt II & their daughter Elizabeth Donahue Vanderbilt (1897-1978). She delivered their fourth child at home just six weeks later on October 15thbefore returning home with her new baby girl Spenser Donahue Vanderbilt III who was christened Elizabeth Spenser Donahue Vanderbilt AFP/DC September 8 1903). It wasn't until 1917 that Mr. and Mrs Rockefeller were able to replace the original two stories of their manor house with a third story which would eventually become known as "The Belvedere". In 1916 they also constructed a swimming pool which continues operation today as well as adding three acres of parkland including a tennis court, baseball diamond, basketball court and playground equipment throughout much of today's city limits stretching into Broward County proper! When completed it would have been one of America's most prestigious modern residences! Unfortunately due primarilyto World War I economic restrictions on building new residential developments south of Interstate 95 many years later The Belvedere saw little use other than being leased out as office space by local banks until finally being razed along with much of downtown Palm Beach Garden during Hurricane Andrew’s destructive rampage across South Florida on August 26 1992! And that’s really all we can say about The Belvedere…it probably stood derelict until sometime around 1992!) One interesting tidbit about The Belvedere which may still be extant is that inside one wall are remnantsof an early electric lighting system which likely functioned prior to 1920!

When the area was first settled, Palm Beach Gardens was known as "The Well-Tempered Garden." The area was originally a part of Indian Key. In 1795, the British Crown granted land to Pieter Annet and other Dutch colonists who founded Fort Caroline. The area became part of Palm Beach County in 1855. During World War II, palm oil production increased due to the war effort. As a result, Palm Beach Gardens became one of the most polluted cities in Florida.
