Palm Bay was part of a large group of islands that were separated by an arm of the Gulf Stream. The island was first discovered by Portuguese explorers in 1521 and named Santa Catarina because it resembled the St. Catherine's Island in Portugal. In 1763, Capt. James Cook charted this island as part of his voyage around Africa and called it Natal (from which we get our name). The next year, when Cook returned to England with a report on his circumnavigation, he gave this new name to all the islands between Cape Hatteras and Guantanamo Bay- making palm bay one of only two places in America bearing this distinction- after Juan de Fuca's Strait of Georgia (the other being Baska). In 1834, Gualtiero Pico made an exploratory expedition to these islands under the leadership of José Manuel Balmaceda y López. On July 2, 1835, Pico reached Conchos Island; upon landing there he found that it was uninhabited because its inhabitants had migrated to Cuba during recent years. In 1838 Capt. John Bowyer explored these islands and named them Ascension after St. John Baptist who had been martyred on nearby Fernandina Beach while preachingto Spanish forces at Fort Caroline (modern day Hollywood). The next year Captain George Vancouver visited these lands during his third circumnavigation; during his stay he built a fort on Conchos Island for guard duty against American warships visiting from Havana Harbor. The name may come from the West Indian palm (Euphorbia esculenta), which grows plentifully near the town's coast. The first Europeans to visit Palm Bay were Spanish traders in 1539 who named it "Isla de Palma" (Island ofPalm). In 1795, Captain James Cook sailed into what is now Palm Bay on his third and final voyage as captain of HMS Endeavour and discovered this island and its surrounding coral reefs while exploring Australia's eastern coast. After Lando Calvo explored much of Florida during the 18th century, he acquired title to all of what is now Monroe County including Palm Bay Island in 1799. In 1811 Captains John Steedman and Nicholas Service explored this island when they were component parts of USS Dolphin under Commandant Thomas Trowbridge for an exploratory mission alongFlorida's Gulf Coast under Lieutenant Colonel Manuel Minaudiere. sail wrecks still remaining off shore provide evidence that various ships passed through here over time - including HMS Erebus on July 14, 1819; USS Constitution on November 7, 1797; USS Constitution Museum on December 10, 1978; USS Enterprise (CVN-65) on October 7th 1959; USS Oriskany(TO-14) May 26th 1944 etc.. On October 3rd 1861 when Confederate forces attacked Fort Donelson in Tennessee they burned down a lighthouse which provided notice to Union troops stationed nearby not to cross the river without getting Authorized by General Ulysses S Grant before doing so as that would have resulted in death or capture by Confederate forces! Today we enjoy beautiful views of both sides of Lake Jackson without having any worry about being caught between two wars! When General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived at Johnson City in May 1865 he decided to make this location his winter quarters since Mobile was too far away for him to march southward with his army. For nine months he stayed here until he moved on to Chattanooga where he destroyed most of Georgia's military infrastructure including Fort Henry and Fort Donelson after their battle with Union forces April 12-13th 1863 . However if you drive out just beyond where Spellings Bridge crosses Robin Creek you will see one small building that used to be called Sherman’s Mill but since then has been known as “Old Depot” because it housed Palm Bay Post Office from 1949 until it closed down in 1985 . So many things changed here during those nine months but one thing remained constant: The people who lived here did so because General Sherman needed them there!
