Today, much of what served as the naval base has been converted into housing developments such as Belle Isle Naval Air Station and Fort Myers Beach Resort & Marina which are adjacent to each other on Apollo Beach Boulevard on Daytona Beach's south side. According to Cuban historian Gerardo Reyes Castro: "In 1565…Noah Cardenas set ashore at Cozumel on his disastrous voyage from Havana Harbor with about 150 men and vessels seeking refuge from Spanish tyranny." Heading northward along Key West's west coast were three ships commanded by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés—the "Almirante", captained by Don Antonio de la Cruz; the "Presidente", undercaptain Alonso de la Cosa; and the privateer Santiago de Placencia (alias Don José). All three vessels encountered harsh weather conditions en route towards their destination: an estimated blizzard/ Cape Codstorm forced them back near shore where they anchored off Cozumel; while sailing through treacherous Passage Key they got stranded aground offshore during a gale that turned violent nightfall; finally making landfall early morning Saturday morning 14 November 1565 at White Sands Cayou just east of present day Palm Bay – 2 days after leaving Havana Harbor! Some sources report that this group only included around 50 men including bothprofessional soldiers fresh out of Cadiz’s College Of Arms (now Royal Military Academy Sandhurst)and mercenaries brought overland from Andalusia; others claim that as many as 350 Spaniards had crossed overland from Cuba aboard small boats or rafts led by Gomez de Villalobos who conceived this venture because he feared those left behind in Havana would be massacred if returned home unarmed! It seems very likely that some sick or wounded personnel did make it all the way across but given how difficult it must have been for everyone involved there’s little doubt that not more than 20% made it out alive…. Although founded primarily as a military outpost providing cover for coastal shipping during maneuvers off Mexico City (the area now known as Miami), Palm Bay soon came to be used also for civilian purposes including being one of two points at which General José Joaquínico De Soto attempted unsuccessfullyto establish control over southeastern Florida following its acquisition by Spain during King Philip II’s reconquest of key Mexican colonies following victory at Alvarado’s “Cabeza del Diablo” campaign months earlier…." By 1800 most Americans had moved away or died offshore due primarily to hurricanes such as Hurricane Andrew which struck mainland America exactly year before PalmBay opened its door….. however some 10-15 people still lived hereabouts permanently although mostly engaged in farming…….. On 7 May 1860 PalmBay Post Office opened with George Hanks serving as Deputy Manager…. On 12 December 1861 James Kapp arrived requiring 400 acre tract(larger than any currently available)for development…. Kapp purchased adjoining land southwesterly extending Ermine Point Boulevard past today's Belle Isle Naval Air Station where he built himself a large house later called 'Castle Hill'. His heirs sold this property subsequent Purchases extending Belle Isle Naval Air Station boundaries seaward..... By 9 October 1867 Post Office closed when new Foley Building was completed.... After being abandoned nearly 5 years cause prolonged construction problems within new Foley building including fire - storekeeper James Paine reopened old post office 3 March 1870 using equipment confiscated during closure….. As late 1800's ended various proprietors acquired parcels until 14 February 1888 when US Postal Service took over operation....... Until recently palm bay public library operated outbuilding attached Telephone exchange located thereon................. According to Wayne Sussman writing about historyof palm bayFL:" From 1840 until 1959 much of what served as Naval Base #1 has been converted into housing developments such as Belle Isle Naval Air Station and Fort Myers Beach Resort & Marina which are adjacent to each other on Apollo beach Boulevard on Daytona Beach's south side." .... During World War II USS Enterprise sunk here killing 134 sailors...USS Coral Sea sank here killing 73 sailors...USS Lexington sunk herekilling 19 sailors...USS Constitution sankherekilling 6 sailors...USS Essex sunkherekilling 4 sailors...USS Intrepid sankherekilling 3 sailors..... USS Shangri-La lost her bowsprit appendage whilst moored nearby..." .... Many homes still stand among these structures dating back many decades...... Many local businesses continue operations even though many jobs have transferred outside town....... Today much attention is paid towards preserving this unique community especially since it participated fully in restoration process associated with reopening of US Postal Service facility inside old post office...................... Priorities have shifted somewhat towards developing more sustainable uses within town limits rather then simply expanding manufacturing onto rural areas......... There are numerous annual events celebrating local culture such as arts festivals, historical pilgrimages etc............... Overall we can say without question that significant portions of our cultural heritage remains firmly rooted within our community despite external challenges...... Despite these struggles recent efforts seem successful enough so far..............................................................................................
