Afterward production ceased due to depletion of resources and environmental damage caused by drilling operations; however some components remain today such as tall pipelines used for transportation fuel supplies from wells along I-4 corridor north of Moss Point Road

The founder of Palm Bay was George Safford who came to this area in 1868 as a surveyor for the government of Florida. He named his new land "Palm Beach" after his friends and fellow surveyors, William Fenton and Samuel Latham. The first permanent inhabitants of what is now Palm Bay were African Americans who worked as indentured servants in nearby Stonington during the 1830s-1840s period known as Slavery in Florida. After emancipation they moved into Palm Bay where they began to own some land themselves until white enterprise arrived in the late 1800s with sugar cane refineries being built around the lagoon region by speculators looking to appropriate slave labor for their industrial needs rather than purchase it outright from slaves themselves like many antebellum Southwesterners had done before them. At this point Kissimmee Creek flowed into Straits Of Florida directly adjacent what would become today's downtown PalmBay although accessible only by boat or kayak due to high tidal flats close at arm's length from shoreline until about 1915 when hurricane Felix destroyed Point Clear Marina facilities restricting access further inland ." This major development led directly unto later civic & cultural events including: first use of electric lights within town limits – 1924; incorporation as a municipality – 1928; world’s largest open air swimming pool opened – 1936; main post office established – 1937; first golf course set up – 1938; establishment of schools including city hall & high school – 1940s thru 1960s.; much prosperity resultant ensuing .. contributing materially towards continued expansion throughout ensuing decades"
