The first European to set foot on the peninsula was Juan Ponce de Leon, who explored it in 1513. In 1755, Floridian Sam Jones founded Palm Bay as a small town on Indian Key. The area became a prosperous plantation during the 18th century, and by 1821, Palm Bay had become a major cultural center for the region. In 1824, John Caulfield established Fort Covington on Big Pine Key, which served as an important trading post and base of operations for American forces during the Seminole Wars. With the end of those wars in 1835, Fort Covington came under British control and declined in importance until it was destroyed by fire in 1861. In 1865, Confederate General Jefferson Davis was captured at Fort Sumter and brought to Jacksonville for trial. During his time in custody at Jacksonville's City Hall Building (now known as Jacksonville State University), he met Anna Julia Child here before being transferred to Fort Monroe for detention. After his release from prison in May 1865, he visited Palm Bay again and decided to make it his permanent home. Anna Julia Child's influential cookbook published later that year is often cited as one of the origins of modern American cuisine. Her husband-to-be - Louis Littauer - also lived here briefly before moving to California
