The town of Palatka, Florida is located in Palm Beach County and has a population of over 22,000 people. The area that now makes up Palatka was first settled by Americans in the 1830s. After the American Civil War, the area came under Spanish control and was known as part of Villa Rica de la Vega. In 1868, Englishman James Ayscough purchased land near what is now downtown Palatka and named it after his home country – England. In 1892, he sold his land to the City of Palm Beach and within a few years, businesses had started popping up in the town. By 1914,Palatka had become an important commercial center for southern Florida. The Depression Era caused many businesses to close down but new ones started up again during World War II when the city offered its resources to help with war efforts. During the 1960s and 1970s, Palatka experienced rapid growth due to its location on US 1 – one of the most traveled highways in South Florida. This growth led to increased traffic congestion on Primary Street which caused several businesses to close their doors throughout the 1990s and 2000s. However, through hard work and dedication from local citizens, Palatka has bounced back since becoming an urban community with multiple retail districts including Downtown PALATKA (Downtown = Central Business District), Old Town PALATKA (OldTown = Western Business District), South Park PALATKA (South Park = Eastern Business District) and North Park PALATKA (North Park = Southern Business District). Palatka, Florida is a small town located in Sumter County, Florida. The population was 1,857 at the 2000 census. Palatka is known for its history and culture which has been passed down through the years. The first settlers in Palatka arrived in 1838 when John Fenton and his family moved from Kentucky to the area. He established a trading post on the Patoka River and named it after his brother-in-law, James palatkan (Palo Alto). In 1839, Fenton's son William Fenton founded a new town called Fort Myers on what is now State Road 301 between present-day Palatka and Fort Myers Beach. Fort Myers was used as a military base during the Indian War of 1811-1813. In 1861, Confederate forces burned down Fort Myers during the American Civil War. As a result of this event, Fort Myers became an uninhabitable ruins that were not restored until 1984 when it was designated as part of fortifications around Mobile Bay National Seashore. During World War II, Palatka played an important role in naval operations due to its location at the mouth of Tampa Bay. The town was also home to Naval Air Station Key West which operated many aircraft during World War II including B-24 Liberators and P-47 Thunderbolt fighters for the United StatesAAF (USAAF). After World War II ended, Palatka experienced rapid growth with businesses opening up throughout downtown; however, since then there have been few economic gains or improvements while residents have faced various challenges such as crime rates becoming more serious and unemployment rates reaching record lows. Today there are several businesses operating within downtown but efforts have been made by city officials to bring back some former commercial uses such as retail stores or warehouse space along with promoting arts and music events throughout the year despite sporadic success. Although these efforts may seem feeble against competition from nearby Jacksonville or Miami Beach - both cities with much larger populations - they provide an interesting perspective on how one community’s struggle can be another’s opportunity if done correctly under certain circumstances
The town of Palatka, Florida was founded in 1868 by General Andrew Jackson. The name is derived from the Seminole word palatka meaning "paddle." The town was moved to its present location in 1881 when a railroad was built through the area.
