There has been a history of shooter eye protection in Palatka, Florida. In the early 1800s, the area was known as "The Swamp". The swamp was made up of alligators and many people died from being bitten by one. So, in order to protect themselves from these animals, people started wearing eye protection. By the 1920s, shooters in Florida were using goggles for shooting competitions. In the 1970s, a company called Smith & Wesson began producing handgun ammunition in Palatka. This company started making handguns with large caliber rounds and needed more accurate shot placement than what was available from other companies. To make this ammo more accurate, they developed sights for their handguns that allowed shooters to place their shots more accurately into the target zone. They also developed a system that allowed users to adjust how much light entered their eyes when looking through their goggles. Palatka, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico and just east of Escambia County. Palatka is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Tampa–St Petersburg-Canton Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Palatka were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his group in 1524. In 1819, Captain John Troup sailed by Palatka Bay on his way from Pensacola to St Augustine with supplies for General José de Santa Anna during the Mexican War of Independence. He named the bay after Captain William Bate, who had been killed during a voyage to Cuba in 1796 by Spanish forces under Governor Manuel de la Torre y Valdés. In 1827, Colonel Augustus Woodward built Fort Walton on what is now State Road 431 near present day Fort Walton Beach. Woodward was sent by President Andrew Jackson to explore new land south of Mobile Bay that would become Baldwin County when he took office in 1829. He named one part of this new county "Palatka" after his old home town of Dayton, Ohio (now known as Canton). In 1840, Major Asa Gray sold land at what is now US 41st Street and Old Hwy 19th Avenue for $2 per acre to Jno A Prentice who planned to make a plantation there called "Plymouth Plantation". The first white person born in Palatka was Isabella Phelps Dodge who arrived there with her husband Eli Whitney on December 12th, 1853 aboard USS Constitution during their tour of America across Seasickness Row from New York City through Havana Harbor before finally making landfall at Key West several days later where they disembarked and traveled north along Miami River before finally reaching Plymouth Plantation where they lived until their death on May 14th 1861 aboard USS Constitution while serving as commissioners for Indian Territory under Ulysses S Grant.) On February 3rd 1903 an F4U Corsair crashed into Palm Beach Harbour killing all four crewmembers except Lieutenant Commander Edward Halsey USN (USNR) commander commanding Air Squadron VF(AG)-3 detached from carrier Enterprise Carrier Strike Group 2 which was escorting Rear Admiral Archibald Cunningham RN flying sorties against submarines offGCM Rockaway Point Naval Air Station Long Island) resulting in Navy's worst aviation disaster since World War II when over 100% loss rates were experienced throughout navy flying training squadrons with no effective response plan or squadron commanders even aware aircraft losses could occur without prior warning any pilots Spitfires North American Harriers Fleet Cannons RAF Typhoons ) With local economy being impacted many residents moved away including families who grandstanded boat races out near airport only for spectators Shadow Warriors ). The town of Palatka, Florida is located in the Panhandle region of the United States. It was founded by Scandinavian immigrants in 1892. The town grew rapidly after the opening of a railroad line through the area in 1907. By 1912, Palatka had a population of over 1,000 people and it became an incorporated city. In 1916, Palatka became the first town in Florida to adopt a municipal charter. The city expanded its boundaries to include parts of Volusia and Brevard counties in 1922 and 1926 respectively. In 1948, Palatka united with neighboring towns of Panama City to form the new municipality of Panama City-Palatka which still exists today as a separate municipality within Polk County. In 1962, all but two of the original townships were eliminated from government control and were merged into the newly formed Palm Beach County. Today, Palatka is home to both the county courthouse and several local businesses including The Lakefront Resort & Marina which is one of Florida's most prestigious tourist destinations.
The Palatka, Florida area was first populated by Seminole Native Americans. They were displaced when the Spanish established a plantation there in the early 1800s. The area became part of the United States after the American Revolution. In 1848, Hermann Poyet purchased land at present-day Palatka and named it for his home town of Palazzo Poyet in Italy. By 1860, most of what is now Palatka had been developed as a rural community with few homes and businesses. The name change to Palatka County in 1868 because of this lack of development. A post office was established at Palatka in 1875, and a county courthouse was built in 1885.
