Palatka, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. It is approximately 20 miles east of Gainesville and 10 miles west of St. Augustine. The population was 1,645 as of the 2010 census. The Palatka Post Office opened on October 25, 1892. In 1907, the name of the post office was changed to Palatka after General Hernando de Soto's Expedition into what is nowFlorida Territory during the Mexican-American War. On January 2, 1909, the post office changed its name to Palatka because it had become an incorporated municipality within Polk County. The current name honors General Edmund Cordero y LaFontaine who fought at Palo Alto during the American Civil War with Confederate forces and later became Governor of Florida in 1861-1865 when Lincoln issued an order dissolvingConfederate state governments in Alabama and Georgia. According to the United States Census Bureau, Palatka has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,521 people, 539 households, and 348 families residing in the town. The population density was 482 people per square mile (190/km²). There were 623 housing units at an average density of 207 per square mile (80/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3%, 10%, and 15%. There were 539 households out of which 27% had children underthe ageof 18 living with them, 44% were married couples living together , 12% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36% were non-families . 25% of all households were made upof individuals and 11% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older

Palatka, Florida is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Palatka is named after Captain John A. Palatka who fought in the Seminole War and became a U.S. Senator from Florida. The first settlers of what would become Palatka were two families from Georgia who arrived in 1835: the Lumpkins and Appling families. In 1837, the Secretary of War authorized Major General Andrew Jackson to purchase 7,000 acres (24 km2) of land east of downtown Jacksonville for $5 per acre (1/4 mile²). This land comprised most of what would become Jacksonville today and was known as East River Plantation until it was sold to entrepreneur James Browning in 1840 for $15 per acre (0.6 km²). The largest parcel acquired byJackson was 1,609 acres (590 hectares), which included present-day Palatka on its eastern border. Browning had several goals for this new plantation including creating an agricultural community with access to markets outside of Jacksonville and ensuring that slave labor would not benefit from white settlement patterns or social upheaval brought about by emancipation Prohibiting slaveholders from selling their slaves into free states continued during Jackson's administration.). Browning named his plantation "East River" after Rivers in England where he also spent some time while visiting his father-in-law before his return home to America in 1839; however, when browning moved back to America after a year abroad he reverted back to "Rivers". Eventually East River became known as "Palatka" because Captain John A Palatka had purchased it just east of Jacksonville Landing on February 26th 1843 (). After purchasing approximately 122 acres (49 ha) north and west of current day Garden City off US 19A near Clearwater Beach on December 5th 1845 (), Captain John A Palatka laid out gridiron roadways on the original 260 Acres lot which included 3 sections: main road leading southwesterly towards Gulfport; second section northwest reaching Belle Isle; third section southeast reaching Apalachia Accordingly North Third Street aligned with these roads bisecting present day Garden City along Fourth Street then easterly down 4 blocks going along First Avenue across railroad tracks into Tampa Bayou opposite St Petersburg Captain John A PalatKA laid out streets gridironfashion extending northeast 8 chains parallel Main Street thence northerly 8 chains through Second Section via Love Canal Cutoff taking possession title January 15th 1850
In 1865, the Palatka Plantation was founded by Colonel John C. Palatka and his wife, Anna Maria. The plantation was located on what is now known as Old Sanford Road in central Florida. In 1868,Palatka purchased land to the east of Palm Beach County and built a new plantation there. The original name of the plantation was "Anna Maria." Colonel Palatka also operated a mill on the plantation which produced flour, feed for horses, and other agricultural products. In 1892, Colonel Palatka's son-in-law and namesake of the Palatka Resort Hotel & Casino opened in Palm Beach County with guests from all over South Florida. The hotel has been continually run by the Palatkases since that time. In 1932, Colonel John C.'s great grandson, Harry Guralnick Jr., became majority owner of PALATKA RESORT HOTEL & CASINO LTD., one of South Florida's leading hoteliers and casinos with more than 100 rooms including suites and luxurious villas across four hotels totaling 235 acres (110 hectares).
