This system eventually became known as "The Palatka System." Over time, other companies followed suit and developed similar systems throughout Southeast Florida. Palatka, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,671 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Gulf of Mexico about 15 miles (24 km) south of Tampa and about 25 miles (40 km) east of Tallahassee. Palatka is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name "Palatka" comes from the Seminole word pala meaning "place where water falls," and taka meaning "island." In 1837, Edward Dunphy established a trading post at Palatka with his brother-in-law Daniel Webster. The post served as a crossing on the St. Johns River for goods brought downriver by travelers along the southern route to Mobile Bay. A wharf was built at Palatka in 1841 by Captain John Rodgers to dock vessels coming down the river from Tampa Bay and Monroe County. In 1847, Isaac Smith acquired land north of town on which he erected a large stockade to protect his interests in cotton cultivation during what were known as Indian Famine years that year. In 1861, James Wofford founded Point Clear Light Navy Yard adjacent to present day Old Fort Myers Beach Boulevard on what are now Wofford Point Road and Old Fort Myers Beach State Park Drive near where US 1 crosses over into Pinellas County from Polk County

Palatka, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. It was founded by Captain James W. Palatka on October 3, 1836 as a landing for passengers and goods coming down the Santa Fe Trail. The first post office was established in 1838. The community grew rapidly during the early years of World War II due to its strategic location near Miami-Dade County and Panama Canal. After the war, Palatka experienced a rapid growth as a result of new housing developments and businesses. Today, the economy is dominated by agriculture and tourism, with most of the population working in nearby Tallahassee or Miami-Dade County. The history of Palatka begins with Captain James W. Palatka who arrived in 1836 on his journey from Missouri via Independence Missouri to find new land west of Tampa Bay. He landed at what is now known as what is now called Palm Harbor on October 3rd, 1836 after sailing overland from St Louis,. He named his landing “Palatka” in honor of his father who had died while serving with General Jackson’s army during the Mexican War (1846-48). In 1840 Captains Jno A Plank (1817-93) and Pertinax Beardmore established two trading posts at present day Palm Harbor – Fort Pierce (now part of Jupiter) and Live Oak Key – along with other outposts throughout Polk County including Fort Myers (now part of Port Orange), Live Oak Key Marina & Dock Company, Bushnell’s Ferry Landing Company & Supply Depot; Atchison Porter Faire Grounds – later renamed Seminole Park; Spanish River Plantation -later renamed Hillsborough Plantation but still considered a plantation until it became an Indian reservation in 1907; Cypress Point Lighthouse built c 1830 by Major John Sibley when Stonington was founded on Pensacola bayou; First Baptist Church built in 1849 by Rev Samuel Chapman although services were originally held outdoors under oak trees before insideing in 1850; Hurricane Andrew destroys much property here including Lt Col William Hays Store No 7 which lay just southwest of current day UF campus days later.. In 1956 Dr David Brainard opened his pathology lab here which continues to be one of Panama City's most successful medical laboratories today! In 1959 UnitedHealthcare moved their headquarters from Pittsburgh PA to Panama City following their acquisition by American healthcare giant UnitedHealthcare Corporation! As this increase happened many businesses relocated here such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Gulfstream Airlines Inc., Philips Electronics Corporation etc.; however none more so than Dole Food Co.'s largest store ever opened here also becoming home to local government offices until 1993 when it closed its doors forever after moving into larger facilities adjacent to USF! Today there are few if any physical reminders remaining from those earlier years except for occasional farm tours organized through local historical societies!
On May 3, 1892, Palatka was founded by J.D. Payne and W.B. Walton. The town was named for the palmetto tree found near the original site of the town. Payne, a white laborer, discovered the palmetto in 1887 while digging a well on his farm; he named the tree after himself and his wife's brother-in-law, Hernando de Soto y Ponce de Leon. The first recorded settler in Palatka was Abram Funkhouser who arrived in 1892 from New York City with his family. In 1916, two brothers, John Wesley and Harry Fenton opened what is now known as Florida’s first grocery store in Palatka called “The Floridian” which later became “Florida Grocery” when it merged with Gulf Grocery Chain in 1984). In 1922 Florida State College (later University) opened its doors to students at nearby Allatoona Park during what is now known as Founder’s Day celebration including a parade through downtown Palatka followed by an open mic night at the old post office on Main Street
