The Palatka, Florida community is located in the Pensacola Bay area of central Florida. The community was first settled by European Americans in the early 1800s. The Palatka Island Railroad continued to play an important role in local life until it ceased operations in 1963. Today, there are only a few remnants of its once significant infrastructure left within the town limits of Palatka. In addition, little development has occurred within the town since its demise except for occasional repairs to aging roads and bridges which have been necessary due to natural disasters such as hurricanes or floods over the years. Despite this lack of recent growth, however, history buffs can still find evidence of Palatka's past throughout downtown along with relics from its former industries including boatbuilders, fishermen, railroad engineers, truckers and more
