In 1865, Leflore County was created from part of Tallahassee County and named for General Andrew Johnson because he had nominated its first president – Abraham Lincoln – for election as President that year. At that time only white people could vote in local elections so Leflore became one of many counties in Florida not designated as black sections during Reconstruction (1868-1912). When Palatka, Florida was first settled in 1832, it was a small farming community located about 25 miles east of Tampa. By 1907, the population had grown to over 10,000 people and Palatka became an important commercial center for the area. After World War II, growth slowed as the economy shifted focus to manufacturing and other sectors. However, when deregulation of the American economy hit in the early 1990s, Palatka began to experience rapid growth again. Today, Palatka is a thriving community with a strong commercial base and diverse cultural attractions. The town of Palatka was named after Major General James Wofford Gracie who fought in the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1868 Captain John Caudill surveyed land around present-day Palatka and named it Fort Brooke after Commodore Andrew Farragut who won fame leading USS Constitution during the war. In 1902 Fort Brooke was renamed Fort Worth Post Office and by 1906 it had become known as Palatka. The name change came about because at that time there were no other settlements in what is now Polk County other than those centered around Tampa or Gainesville which were still under Spanish control at that time. During World War I,Palatka played an important role as a training ground for logistics troops from newly acquired countries such as Germany and Austria. The post office remained open until 1954 when it was closed due to budget cuts by then Mayor Harry Dentz Bandy III. In 1984 phosphate processing company Newmark PaperCompany merged with two others forming Atlantic Richfield Company which later changed its name to Gulfstream Paper Co., Incorporated on October 1st 1986 after merging with United States Paper Merchants Association headquartered in Jacksonville FL also known as USPMA (United States Paper Merchants Association). On January 1st 1990 GulfstreamPaperCo.,Incorporated changed its corporate name back to Gulfstream paper Corporporated effective February 14th 1990 following both companies merger into one corporation under new management led by CEO/ President David Kistler Sr.. A year later on May 9th 1991 USPMA announced they would be selling their assets including all their properties located inside of Palm Beach County including their headquarters building located at One University Place called “Hollywood” which became subject to leases being made available for occupancy by various businesses including Marriott International hotel chain subsequent owner since December 2003 through acquisition process having been completed on November 4th 2006
In 1837, the United States purchased Palatka, Fla., from the Spanish for $8,000. The town was named after Joséfina de la Vega y Ortiz, a Spanish noblewoman who had bought it in 1794. The first permanent residents were American soldiers who arrived in 1840. By 1845, Palatka had a population of about 100 people and was self-sufficient. The first store in Palatka was built by John Pemberton in 1847. A cotton gin and gristmill were built soon after. In 1849, a post office was established at Palatka and the population grew to over 200 people. By 1865, there were three churches in Palatka with attendance ranging from 30 to 50 people per Sunday morning. A school was also established that year with 25 students enrolled. Palatka saw its fair share of social unrest during the early 20th century including several waves of immigration which caused difficulties for locals such as lack of jobs and overcrowding on the streets. However, overall life went relatively smoothly until World War II when PALATKA lost its status as an unincorporated community due to military service restrictions placed on the area by the US government
