Palatka, Florida is a census-designated place located in Palm Beach County, Florida. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,595. Palatka was founded in 1875 by Captain John P. Power and his family after they left Tampa for good because of yellow fever. The first post office at Palatka was established on March 17, 1876. In 1905, the town became a city when it incorporated as a result of an act of the Florida Legislature. The area now known as Palatka was originally part of Fort Myers until that fort was destroyed during the Cuban War in 1898. The area now lying east of Interstate 95 along US 41 became part of Palatka after that road was built through the area in 1909. Part of what is now called downtown Palatka was laid out around 1910 by planner Ebenezer Cooke Sr., one of several planners who worked on developing Palm Beach County at that time. In 1942, much drama ensued when Luftwaffe bombers raided palm beach county and caused extensive damage to homes and businesses near what is now downtown PALATKA! Many people were killed or injured; some still remember those days quite well! After World War II ended things slowly returned to normal with many new residents moving into town over time including government employees living on Capitol Hill which towers over downtown PALATKA today! The Palatka area was first settled by the Seminole people in 1823. The area became a part of the United States in 1845, when Florida was created from Spanish territory. In 1861, Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith attacked Fort Donelson, Tennessee and destroyed much of the town of Palatka before withdrawing to Chattanooga. In 1865, after the fall of Atlanta, General Sherman sacked Palatka and burned all its buildings. The town never regained its former prominence as a commercial center and today is only a small farming community.
