In 1907, a railroad line was built through the area and Palatka became an important stop on the train route between Tampa and Jacksonville. A large hotel called the Florida House was built in 1911 at what is now State Road 593 east of town. The 1920s saw significant economic growth when phosphate mining began operations nearby and new industry developed such as paper mills and automobiles. However, during World War II the community came under bombardment from Nazi Germany during the Battle of Palatka which hit hard with many homes destroyed or damaged. After the war ended,Palatka experienced rapid growth as many residents moved into newly created suburbs outside of town while other businesses continued to operate along State Road 593 until they closed down around 1970 due to competition from newer businesses within walking distance of town limits
