Palatka, Florida is a small town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood metropolitan area. Palatka was founded in 1892 and incorporated as a village on December 12, 1903. It became a city on November 5, 1957. On May 9, 1990, Palatka merged with neighboring Jupiter to form the new City of Jupiter-Palatka Combined Statistical Area. The merger caused the loss of one full municipality to Broward County and added an additional 2,893 residents to Palm Beach County during that decade. The first Europeans to visit what is now Palatka were Spanish traders in 1565 who named it La Boca de la Mina after a point they had passed along the way from Cuba. In 1795 French explorer Duvalier discovered land grant known as "Tampa Bay" but no evidence exists that anyone lived there until 1892 when Wm Hernando de Soto and his men set up camp on what would become know as "Site 6", just east of present day Palatka Village (now part of downtown). The Jacksonville-based First National Bank constructed several cotton ginned mills starting in 1902 which produced raw cotton for shipment downstream across Lake Okeechobee into South Florida by barge to be processed into cloth and other products before being exported back home via railways or shipping containers downriver past Tampa Bay all the way up through St Petersburg before finally landing at Miami where it was turned into textiles for export by local mill owners like J&L Mills before eventually becoming shoeshine parlors or department stores over time until being shuttered by World War II when American textile production slumped due to decreased demand after Japan’s entry into World War II; however some locals continue manufacturing Textile Museum artifacts today including this very old machine mending shed still used today! After WWI finished hostilities ceased many Floridians settled in rural areas north and centralFlorida looking for opportunities opened up during post war boom years such as construction jobs available with Federal housing developments state funded called “Gates Towers” dotting every corner throughout much of this country but few if any people touched those kind of opportunities because they wanted something more than just low paying factory work; instead many decided they wanted their own place so they started building homes!! Many WWII veterans returning home also brought their families with them so housing prices increased slowly but surely making Palatkans one of America’s most costly places to live…. quickly surpassing even Beverly Hills California!!! Palatka, Florida was founded on March 14, 1835 by Captain James W. Palatka and his band of pioneers. The town was named for the palatka River, which ran through the area. The first store in Palatka opened its doors on December 5, 1836. On January 8, 1840, a post office was established in PalatKA with Captain J.W.Palta as the first mail carrier. In 1845, a school was built and in 1850 a courthouse and jail were constructed. In 1861, Confederate General John Cate Blount fought an unsuccessful battle at Fort Wagner near PalatKA. After the battle, many Union soldiers abandoned their supplies and traveled to fortifications along the banks of the palatka River to resupply. As a result of this event, Confederate forces were able to build strong defenses around the town while Union troops were unable to reinforce it effectively
