On October 5, 1984, the Palatka-Largo County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported shooting in the area of 1002 NW 3rd Street. When deputies arrived on scene they found a man with gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. A gun battle ensued which ended with the arrest of two suspects.
Palatka, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 5,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Walton Beach– Escambia County metropolitan area. The area that now includes Palatka was first settled by Europeans in the mid-19th century as part of what is now Alabama and Georgia. At some point, it became known as "Palatka," likely because of its remote location on a plantation called Palatka Plantation near present-day Dothan, Alabama. In 1868, the Miami and Erie Railroad was built through Palatka to connect Fort Walton Beach with Miami. By 1872, the town had become a prosperous commercial center with two stores and several homes. During World War II,Palatka played an important role in the Battle of Okinawa when more than 3,000 American troops were stationed there during that conflict. After the war ended, many residents left for various reasons but a few stayed to build new homes and businesses on downtown streets that still bear their names today: Noland Avenue (now State Road 258), Dooley Boulevard (now US 301), Wilson Boulevard (now SR 258), Executive Drive (now US 301) and Park Place (now US 341). A post office was established at Palatka in 1893; it remained in operation until 1964. In 1907, a Methodist church was built adjacent to downtown; it remains operational today as well as being one of only two churches remaining from pre-World War II Palatka. The other church burned down in 1957 after being damaged by Hurricane Agnes. On October 12th 1941 local citizens approved annexation into Tallahassee by Tallahassee Township which then assigned Captain John Wiestman as mayor for all purposes effective November 1st 1941 until his death on December 15th 1941 due to heart failure at age 63 years old

Palatka, Florida is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Palatka was James Ligonier who arrived on July 20, 1837. He had been driving from Jacksonville to Fort Myers with his family when he saw an Indian campsite and decided to stay for the night. Ligonier named his new place "Moccasin Bend". In 1840, Captain John Stroud purchased land near present-day Palatka from the Apalachee Indians for $2 per acre. In 1841, Captain Stroud built a cabin on what is now State Road 806 just east of present-day downtown Palatka. The first school inPalatka was built in 1845 by Mrs. Sarah Goodspeed as a one room log cabin on Public School Place (now Veterans Memorial Boulevard). In 1852 Samuel Hickey came to Palatka and started farming near present day Market Square which later became known as Hickey's Landing due to its proximity to the original landing site where Hickey set up his farmstead and store. In 1865 Jno Fenton moved from Aventura into Palm Bay County and began purchasing land here including some of what is now east side of downtown Palatka . On January 6th1866 Fenton acquired 5 acres (20ha) south of downtown along US 1 between US 192nd Street and SR 734th Street from Elisha Pogue Robinson for $4 per acre (). He named this tract "Fenton's Purchase" after himself and it remains so today (). When Fenton died in 1870 his estate passed through several hands until it reached Ozzie Bogan who patented it to Wm C Dunlap on October 3rd1872 () For about 25 years this parcel lay vacant until developers agreed to build a shopping mall thereon (). On November 12th1991 Mayor Tom Bradley dedicated the current Walmart Supercenter located on that site which replaced an earlier Sears store that burned down in 1978(). Today Walmart employs over 10,000 people at its two stores in Palm Bay Countiesand continues to grow with plans for more than 100 stores across South Florida by 2021! The town’s growth continued unabated through World War II when many manufacturing jobs were relocated elsewhere but much of Downtown PALATKA remain intact including fine Arts galleries such as Gilded Cage Gallery & Sculpture Studio (), Historical Museum (), PRESSE STUDIOS () [] []], After World War II many residents left town because they could not find work or because they did not like living close enough to Tampa or Orlando . Some residents decided to move back into their old homes while others bought newer homes elsewhere within our city limits . By 1970 only about 50% of PALATKA residents lived outside our city limits ; however since then most have either moved back inside or are expanding their families by coming here live with children…. Today PALATKA has evolved into a vibrant community full of people who enjoy life - whether they are raising children indoors or outdoors... There are several schools within walking distance of each other: Elementary School District No1 (Units I-III), Middle School District No2 ( Units IV-VI), High School District No1 (VII-XII), UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA - FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY - THOMAS MARTIN SCHOOLS (),] [][]]]. Most citizens also enjoy organized sports teams within easy reach such as baseball (), basketball (), softball (), soccer (), tennis ())], golf ())], lacrosse ())], water polo ()]. The Palatka area was first settled by European immigrants in the 18th century. In 1836, Florida was admitted to the United States as a slave state and Palatka became one of the first black towns in the state. The town continued to grow after emancipation until it reached its current population in 1912. After World War II, Palatka became an agricultural center with a focus on citrus production.
