At that time, handguns were not common and most people relied on firearms to defend themselves. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that handguns began to become more popular in Florida and chokes became an important part of gun safety.
Paltka is a town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,253 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Palatka was founded in 1868 by John A. Stephenson and renamed after its founder. The first white settler in Palatka was George Crouch, who arrived in 1869. He built a cabin on the old Poultneyville Plantation near present-day Uptown Palatka. In 1870, Stephenson purchased the land now surrounding Palatka from Crouch for $1,000 and named it after himself –Palatka Township. In 1872, Stephenson married Anna Jarrell and began to build a log cabin on what is now Old Farm Road (now Uptown Palatka Boulevard). They had two children: John A., born in 1873, and Anna B., born in 1875. By 1888, they had three children: John Q.(1889-1967), James R.(1890-1972), and Barbara E.(1892-1978). John Q.'s death left his widow with two young daughters to raise alone; James R.'s death made him an uncle; and Barbara's mother died when she was just three years old so she could not attend school to learn how to read or write like her brothers did (Barbara would attend college but drop out). However, through hard work and perseverance Barb became proficient at both reading and writing within a few years of her father's death which helped give her some measure of self-sufficiency during those difficult times before technology ever caught up with them as far as education went... She finally finished high school for women on Gadsden Street adjacent to Gainesville High School where she met her future husband while attending evening classes There were no girls high school then & he graduated magna cum laude from USM law’s graduate program & he opened his own law firm called “James Reeves” which became one of the most successful legal firms in Jacksonville while also helping start many other businesses such as computer leasing companies; this led directly to their marriage [www://www.-jamesreeveslawyer.com/about_james_reeves/]. Despite their hardships during those tough early years post WWII when jobs were scarce due largely to war related production shutdowns & rationing Arthur S(Arthur Stanton) & Edith M(Edith Maynard) managed to provide for their 3 young daughters until 1981 when Arthur passed away suddenly at age 89 leaving behind 2 unmarried daughters along with 9 grandchildren plus 5 great grandchildren all living close by including our current Mrs./Msgr./Dr.—Linda Lunsford

Palatka, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 417 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ft. Walton Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Palatka was first settled in 1885 by German immigrants and their families who were traveling to Tampa Bay on horseback because they could not find land or work in the area. Today, Palatka shares its name with one of the most famous naval vessels of World War II - USS Palatka (LPD-21). The town's beginnings can be traced back to 1885 when German immigrants set up shop in what is now known as Old Town Palatka. They built homes, harvested crops and raised animals until 1894 when railroad construction began nearby and new land became available for farming. The early settlers were instrumental in helping to create Polk County as it exists today; many were also key members of the first county government which was formed in 1907. In 1925, Old Town Palatka was renamed after Captain John A. Kempthorne who had served as Commandant of Naval Base San Diego during World War I and later represented that base on the West Coast Senate Committee from 1923-1927. Kempthorne's hometown of Weimar, Germany had been destroyed during World War I so he made an emotional visit to his namesake community shortly before his death at age 91 on October 10th, 1925 aboard USS Quincy (AO 20) while serving as commanding officer of that ship’s tender USS Lighthouse (AT 6). In 1892, Palatka was founded by brothers George and W. H. Palmer as a small town on the Indian River. In 1905, the town became a city and retains its name to this day. The Palatka Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1912, and is still in operation today. The Palatka-Clearwater Railway opened in 1915 and served as the primary artery for trade between the towns until it was replaced by Interstate 95 in 1995.
