In the early 1800s, Palatka was a small community located in the now-defunct city of Daytona Beach. At that time, it was a bustling center for trade and industry. Many of the town's businesses were engaged in the production and sale of firearms. Gunsmiths and leatherworkers were among the town's most common employers. One such business was John Brougham & Sons, which manufactured handguns and pistols. The company had its origins in 1828 when David Brougham, a British immigrant, opened a firearms shop in Daytona Beach. Brougham quickly became one of Daytona Beach's most successful businessmen. He also played an important role in developing Florida's gun culture. Brougham & Sons was eventually sold to local entrepreneur George Hargrave in 1851. Hargrave continued to operate the business until his death in 1875. During his time as owner/manager of Bougham & Sons, he made significant contributions to Florida'sgun culture both past and present. He is credited with helping to develop what is now known as "the Second Amendment."

In 1923, the state of Florida passed the concealed weapons act which allowed any person over 21 years old to carry a handgun without having to obtain a license or get an endorsement from a sheriff or justice of the peace. In 1935, Palatka became an incorporated city and its mayor became able to issue licenses for carrying handguns. This led to more gun-owning citizens being able to protect themselves from crime. Palatka, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 33,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county's largest town and the second most populous municipality after Miami Beach. The name of Palatka comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "haunted place." In 1892 developer J. P. Morgan sent surveyors to explore whether he had the right to build a city on land that he had acquired from the Seminole Nation in 1875 as part of the Treaty of Fort Myers. He did not receive confirmation until 1897 when commissioners arrived in his carriage with plans for a resort town on what became State Road 327 (now US 1). The first house in Palatka was built by George Wessels, who served as mayor from 1903 to 1905 and again from 1912 to 1914. Wessels' home still stands and is used as office space by City Hall. On November 15, 1907 Mayor Wessels proposed that Palatka be chartered as a municipality but this proposal was lost in committee because no one wanted their nameakes annexed into Miami Beach! In 1932 Mayor Sidney Wexler proclaimed that Palatka would become "the new shopping center of South Florida" because it had more businesses than any other small town in Palm Beach County save forbroward! This statement turned out to be true since Palatka has been known for its arts and entertainment scenes throughout its history including being home to both the Palm Beach Philharmonic Orchestra and Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestras; two major film festivals each year; multiple NASCAR races at Daytona International Speedway; numerous concerts by world renowned orchestras such as Beethoven, Wagner and Mozart; several professional golf tournaments over the years including The Masters Tournament held here twice;[1] headquarters for Broward/Miami Dade Corrections Department which opened in 2003 and also includes three jails - one located downtown (opened 1974), one on Southeastern Boulevard (opened 1978) Kingwood Correctional Complex east of I-95 near SW 156th Street[2]and finally Everglades Correctional Facility just south of NW 2nd Avenue which opened 2006

In 1914, Palatka became a city with its own mayor and council; it continued to grow until 1920 when it merged with Jacksonville to form Jacksonville–Palatka Combined Statistical Area. The Palatka, Florida community started as a small settlement in 1838 when Captain John A. Musgrove and his family arrived on the wharf at Fort Clinch. The Musgroves were the first white people to live in what is now Palatka. In 1841, Samuel Prentice built the first store in town. In 1865, Captain William H. Simons erected a light-house on the island of Jupiter for navigation purposes. By 1880, there were about 60 residents in Palatka and it had a post office and two churches. The population grew rapidly during the early 20th century because of its strategic location as an agricultural center between Tampa and Jacksonville. During World War II, Palatka was one of several towns along the Florida-Alabama border that received food rationing from U.S. government officials because of the proximity of military sites and factories
