One notable event that took place here occurred on December 25, 1941 when Japanese Imperial forces attacked Pearl Harbor; all but two local businesses were destroyed by the raid, which killed more than 230 people including many of Palatka's residents and workers. As a result of this attack (the only time an American city was hit directly during World War II), President Franklin D Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 which ordered all American citizens living within 2 miles (3 km) of Japan's naval base at Pearl Harbor to evacuate; over 3 million people did so across America within 72 hours. In 1945, following World War II and Allied victory over Japan,Palatka became part of the new United StatesofAmerica as well as its Territories Of Guam and Puerto Rico; however it would not become fully U.S.-registered until 1959 when it changed its name to Palm Beach County after then-Governor Reubens Stephens picked it for its climate - "the islands being beautiful year-round". The population peaked at 1,521 in 1960 before declining to 511 at the 2010 census due largely to suburbanization and other changes wrought by economic recession combined with global competition since 2000s/2010s especially from Broward County adjacent to Palm Beach County proper - giving rise to several unofficial nicknames associated with both counties: "The Magic Years" while Palm BeachCountyLiars claims that "It used to be that if you wanted something bad enough you could get it [in Broward]", referring back specifically to 1947-1948 when countywide land prices increased 50%. In the early 1800s, Palatka was a small community located on the Gulf of Mexico. It consisted of just a few families and their livestock. In 1821, the area was surveyed and designated as part of what is now Palm Beach County. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn, cotton, sugar cane and other crops. In 1828, the town was renamed for Major General James Kenedy (1786-1852), an American general who fought in the Mexican War and in Florida's Seminole Wars. By 1830, Palatka had 4 churches and about 100 residents. The town began to prosper due to its strategic location on a main shipping route between New Orleans and Tampa Bay. But by 1840, most of Palatka's residents had moved away because of changes in American society which favored slavery over free labor.
