Palatka, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. As of the 2010 census, Palatka had a total area of 31 square miles (85 km²), all land. The community was founded by Germans who immigrated to Florida in 1845 from Württemberg, Germany. The first post office in Palatka was established on February 17, 1846. The name "Palaatka" means "place where saltwater enters." In 1854 the first railroad arrived andpalatka became an important business center for local farmers and ranchers. In 1907 a new courthouse and jail were built; both are still standing today. On December 3rd, 1914 Palatka had its own hospital which closed in 1966 due to budget cuts however it is currently being used as part of the University of South Florida's School of Medicine campus. As early as 1905 there were plans to build a golf course in Palatka but because of economic conditions no action was taken until 1908 when construction began on what would become Cypress Golf Course (now known as Pinehurst). On July 22nd 1915 President Woodrow Wilson made his famous speech at Gainesville-West Lakefront Park calling for American unity during World War I and specifically mentioning America's need for munitions production so that America could remain active in the war effort; this speech helped spur development around Allied Base Areas including Palatka which eventually led to incorporation into Palm Beach County on August 29th 1920 A post office called "PalaatKA" opened on January 15th 1870 under Leland Stanford House No 1114 SW 1st St., now part of USF’s School Of Medicine campus . On October 12th 1911 Sheriff Henson appointed James Fenton asPalatkas only justice of peace; this position held until 1919 when Judge Ayer took office . In 1922 two blocks north east corner SW 1st Ave/SW 6th St., now home to USF tennis courts and student housing became known as The Village (now part of Coral Springs) after Colonel Harry Truman’s presidential campaign stop here on March 3rd1945 following his victory over Franklin D Roosevelt at Hyde Park Corner race track near Miami

Palatka is a town in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sarasota-Bradenton-Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Palatka was founded by American Civil War veterans on November 11, 1868 as a small military outpost on the bayous of Manatee and Sarasota counties. The town quickly grew to become one of the most important fishing and agricultural communities in Florida. The first post office was established in 1870; it closed in 1903. In 1914, Palatka became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and four council members; it remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became a city under the terms of Act 5 of that year. The name "Palatka" is Spanish for "wave". The original settlers were soldiers who came west during the Mexican–American War to protect U.S.-owned shipping interests on the Bayou Sara River from enemy attack. They named their new community after General Antonio López de Santa Anna's successful invasion of Mexico City in 1847 (see Battle of Palo Alto). When they returned east after those hostilities ended, they took up residence on what is now Palatka Boulevard just north of downtown; there they built their first store and started trading goods with other settlements along Tampa Bay (including St Petersburg) and inland riverside villages such as Citrus Heights and Myersville near Jacksonville. fur traders also visited these areas during this time period to procure Indian trade secrets from Seminole leaders living among them downstream in Hillsborough County
In 1851, Palatka was founded by Capt. John B. Swenson and his family. The town began as a farming community with a population of about fifty people. By 1870, the town had grown to over one thousand residents. Palatka became an important center for cotton production in Florida due to its location on the Apalachicola River. In 1915, the United States Coast Guardstationed at Palatka made it the first U.S. station on the Florida Keys. In 1935, Major General James Doolittle activated Operation Neptune's Spear, which targeted Japanese forces in Southeast Asia during World War II. As part of this mission, General Doolittle ordered his headquarters to move from San Diego to Palm Beach County and establish an airbase there for use by fighter planes bombing Japan targets in the region. On July 10, 1950, Governor of Florida Manuel López de León signed House Bill No.. 5672 into law which createdPalatka Regional Airport (PAL). PAL was designed as a reliever airport for Miami-Dade Airport and consisted of two runways: 3/21—long enough to handle larger jets—and 3/22—short enough only for smaller jets and helicopters.—It served as a local landing strip until 1978 when it was widened to four lanes wide and extended eastward under I-95 toward Homestead Airport.—The original PAL tower still stands today as a reminder of what could have been if PAL had been built.—
