The Payne brothers purchased land east of the Apalachicola River from the Seminole Indians and built a log cabin on what is now US 87/1097. They named their settlement after Major General Georgepalatka, an early American hero who helped suppress Seminole Indian resistance to white settlement in South Florida during the 1800s. In 1870, Palatka's first post office was established and operated for two years under the name of "New Fort Pierce." In 1872, Palatka became a community under the jurisdiction of Stonington County when it was created from parts of Miami and Dade counties. In 1886, Palatka incorporated as a village with a population of 100 residents. On July 1, 1907, it became an unincorporated community within Broward County when that county was created from parts of Palm Beach and Miami Counties. On February 15, 1921,Palatka lost its charter as an unincorporated community due to changes in Broward County government made at that time by then-Governor Manuel Largo as part of efforts to modernize Broward County government while keeping its rural character。 On August 5, 1951 Palatka had its first tornado outbreak which destroyed most of the local stores and homes along US 87/1097 between milepost 9 & 10 (the townships located east & west of this intersection). In 1892, the railroad company Palatka and Atwater Railway was organized. The line connected Atwater with Sanford, Florida. In 1902, the railway company was acquired by the Florida Central Railroad. The Palatka-Sanford Line became part of the FEC in 1912.
