Ammunition was needed for these early guns because there wasn't much of it on hand. The first store in Palatka was established in 1892 by three men - Charles Crouse, James Hodges and Arthur Saginaw. They sold ammunition, gun parts and other items. In 1909, the store was moved to its present location and became known as the Palatka Armory. It remained here until it closed in 1974.
Palatka is an upcoming town in the Miami-Dade County, Florida area. The population was 12,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name Palatka is derived from Spanish palacio, meaning "palace." The first real estate speculation in Palatka started in 1892 when two brothers named John and George Gilmore bought a tract of land east of present-day Palatka for $2,000. In 1903, their brother-in-law James Hickey purchased the same tract and renamed it after his friend Colonel James S. Hickey who had served as a Brigadier General in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. In 1907, Colonel Hickey's son Samuel sold another piece of land to Fenton Wigger for $5,000 which became known as Wigger's Landing on State Road A1A (now US 1). In 1909 businessman Isaac Ziegler acquired a tract of land to the south of town from Thaddeus Jansen for $3,000 which he named Ziegler's Beach after himself and later changed it to Ziegler's Harbor due to its strategic location next to nature resources such as mangroves and tidal flats. In 1912 developer William Kapp bought 10 acres across from State Road A1A from Thaddeus Jansen for $2,500 which he renamed Kapp Park. In 1914 developer Harry Goudreau purchased 20 acres across from Kapp Park from Goudreau for $4,000 which he renamed Goudreau Heights after himself and later changed it back to Goudreau Plaza after purchasing additional land adjacent to it. Name changes continued until 1925 when entrepreneur Homer Cummings developed what would become known as Cummings Point on Big Cypress Creek north of town limits - this would eventually become home to Palm Bay Federal Credit Union and other businesses including a movie theater that opened in 1931 called The Colony Theatre Annex with seating for 2200 people; however only 515 people actually attended screenings out of an original total Of 2500 tickets Given that there were no public transportation services available within miles similar then or now existing within Miami – much like today – PALATKA’S FIRST MOTORCYCLE RACE took place at Cummings Point on May 15th 1929 led by Joe Sawyer & Davey Payne using Curtiss Cyclone motorcycles

In 1836, settlers from Georgia arrived in what is now Palatka and founded a small town named Forney. The town was destroyed by a fire in 1837, but quickly rebuilt. In 1840, another group of Georgians arrived and founded Fort Gaines on the nearby island of Cozumel. The fort served as an important military base during World War II. After the war, Fort Gaines fell into disrepair and was abandoned in the early 1960s. Today, there is only remnants of the fort remaining on Cozumel Island.
