Oviedo, Florida is a small town located in Orange County, Florida. The population was 7,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Orlando Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit this area were the Spanish who named it San Pedro Bay after their saint Peter. In 1819, Captain James Cook discovered and named this area "Oviedo" after his friend and mentor, Sir John Hawkins. The name was probably derived from an Indian word meaning place of watermelon or sweet potato vines. There are several theories about where Oviedo got its name; one suggests that it comes from a Native American term meaning "place where theou can find sugarcane." In 1845, a post office was established in Oviedo with the name of San Pedro Bay (now Kissimmee). A year later, on April 3rd of that year, Governor Thomas Jett appointed Wm Hickey as Postmaster and Drury as First Clerk. On July 1st of that year, there were only 8 residents living in Oviedo when State Road 10 was completed linking Kissimmee with Sanford and then Dunnellon via Sanford connectin g roads (now US 192). On October 2nd of 1922 there were 12 registered voters in Oviedo when State Road 222 became available to travel through town on Alternate Route #2A which connected Kissimmee to Sanford bypassing old US 192 west of town. Santa Clara Lake filled up due to heavy rains on November 15th 1921 making access difficult so plowing started on December 5th around 6am followed by collection starting at 9am until dark continuing until alluvial materials had been collected including cobbles and roots left over from previous flooding events caused by Hurricane Andrew on August 26th pyramid shaped pile measuring 50 feet high and 4 feet wide layered over cobble bottom measuring 30 feet deep containing more than 16 tons grading 117% sand it took nearly two weeks for alluvial materials to be removed with assistance from local farmers using dogs before road could reopen December 20 th . That same day state road 10 re-opened following earlier damage done by Hurricane Andrew giving residents access back into their communities within less than 24 hours This event is chronicled in history books as “The Day ovieedo reopened” After years of efforts made by locals & state government alike little had changed since 1920 when Fenton Goodnight opened his grocery store just east of town near SR 10 & US 192 . His store soon became known as “The Old Store” today known as “Goodnight’s” . When goodnight died in 1978 he bequeathed his business to his son Lee Goodnight Jr who sold it to Pritchett Farms Incorporated which operates it currently under the name Pritchett's Olives
The city of Oviedo, Florida was founded by Captain John St. Johns in 1837. It was named for his old friend and mentor, José de Oviedo y Gómez. The city became an important transportation hub on the panhandle of Florida due to its location at the mouth of the Apalachicola River. A canal was constructed through Oviedo in 1846 to connect it with Mobile, Alabama. By 1850, Oviedo had a population of over 6,000 people and was one of the most prosperous towns on the panhandle. However, economic troubles began to take hold in the town after railway developers came along and started building tracks through town. This caused many businesses to close their doors and lead to a decrease in population and wealth. In 1887, Oviedo fire destroyed much of downtown including its amphitheater which had been used for music and theater events since 1792. The fire also destroyed several homes which again led to a decrease in population as people left town for fear of being caught up in the flames. However, this did not stop oviedo from continuing to be an important center for trade and commerce until after World War II when it slowly went into decline due to changes within the economy brought about by post-war suburbanization
