The history of Oviedo can be traced back to 1821 when Spanish colonists arrived in Bay County searching for new land to settle after explorations led them to believe that what they found were islands off the coast of Mexico City. They named their new settlement San Miguel de Allende after this saint's patron, Santiago de Allende y Paez who had helped carry out a mission to evangelize Indians thereabouts some years earlier. After a few years growth stagnated due to lack of natural resources (the early 1800s were a time whenbay county consisted mostly Of swampy lowlands), an act by Governor Manuel Garza decided to build railroads through bay county which would connect Tampa with Jacksonville so that more people could be brought into town during those daysof great economic growth across many Counties including St Petersburg/Clearwater etc). In January 1861 three men - George Washington Payne (brother-in-law & business partner John Broughton) James Tappan Sr., Josephine Vanderbilt (niece & husband Newcomb Vanderbilt) started building railroad ties along Orange Ave just north east side old bank building now south side Market St @Crescent Dr blocked train tracks so they started working west side 2nd street past old post office
On January 1, 1845, Oviedo was incorporated as a village in circuit court. It would become the first town in Seminole County. The name change came about because of its location on the Miami River. In 1865, Oviedo became a city and on July 1, 1895 it was made an unincorporated community within Seminole County. On November 3, 1931, Oviedo was renamed Fort Pierce after Rear Admiral William Farragut who helped to end the Spanish-American War at Florida's mouth with his squadron of warships.
