In 1845, Don Carlos Manuel de la Vega y Costilla founded what would become Oviedo after purchasing land from Apalachicola Native Americans. After becoming an American citizen in 1848, he donated his land to the United States Government for development into a military post named Fort Moultrie. The first settler in Oviedo was James Auld who arrived on horseback in 1851. He built his home on Old Mission Road which still stands today. Auld's daughter Anna married Henry Welch in 1857 and they started raising chickens on theirproperty until they moved to their current home on High Street in 1865. The Welch family would continue to live there until 1951 when they sold it to Dr. Wm Hopley who additions added back porch, chicken coop and garage onto their original two-story farmsteads nearpresent day State Road 516 / US Highway 441 (Florida Turnpike). Dr. Hopley's wife Lillian purchasedthe house from him subsequent year and operated it as her main residence until her deathin 1984; however, portions of the property remain undeveloped as private residences today In 1893, Jno Purdy established a grocery store at 12th Avenue and Main Street which would later become known as Purdy's Pharmacy & Confectionery which remains one of Oviedo’s oldest businesses still active today Purdy was succeeded by his son Hiram Purdy Jr., who ran the store until its closure during World War II due to shortages of munitions needed for Operation Overlord Hiram Purdy Sr.'s son John WIlliam Purdy opened up his own pharmacy next door starting out with just four shelves before eventually expanding into 16 shelving units with eventual growth into one hundredth floor building Today’s pharmacy building dates back to 1954 when it reopened under new ownership after being closed for many years Doris Easley bought 8 acres northwest of present day High Street from John Wlliam Purdy Sr.'s widow Doris Easley beginning life as an agricultural research station called University Station where she directed research programs including those involved with horticulture tillage methods;fruit gathering;manure collection;and fruit cleanup techniques Easley continued this program until her death in 1978 havingdirected more than fifty research projects there over the course of her career . Her husband Vernon served as Director Emeritus along with donating mostofthe acreage remaining within university station boundaries . Today muchof this property remains undefended parkland adjacenttoHighStreetwherestudentactivitiesare initialled shortlybeforeChristmas each year thanksto generous donationsfrom anonymous alumni..
