Oviedo is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,562 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ferry Pass–Biloxi Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oviedo is located on the Gulf of Mexico and forms a peninsula between the Mobile Bay to its east and Pensacola Bay to its west. The first white person to set foot in what is now Oviedo was Rufus King who landed there in 1811 with his French voyageur party as part of a larger expedition under Captain John Fenton. He named it after his home island of Saint Vincent (Anguilla). The town dates back to 1822 when Jno. Waddell granted land for the purpose of erecting a schoolhouse and Store House at present day Main Street and Broadway Streets. In 1830, John McGowan donated land for a Methodist Church which became an Episcopal Church in 1886. A post office called Oviedo was established in 1822, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1840, Wm Hite built a wharf on the bayou that led into Mobile Harbor for shipping goods from Alabama to Mississippi; he also constructeda store on High Street corner Main Street In 1865, Confederate General Pritchard surrendered at Appomattox Court House; however, much later information indicates that he may have been killed or captured while retreating through rural areas near hereabouts In 1898-99 Manuel Antonio Sanchez built one of America’s largest sugar plantations here – San Antonio de la Vera Cruz – making him America’s first Hispanic plantation owner The plantings continued untilaky 1999 when they were sold off to Syngenta AG . The community has experienced some significant changes over time; however, its most significant event occurred on November 25th, 1959 when President Dwight Eisenhower addressed a joint session of Congress at nearby Gainesville State College. This event marks the beginning of what would become known as "the golden age" for Oviedo due to its close proximity to Washington D.C., as well as its burgeoning tourist industry that attracted visitors from all over America.
