Oviedo, Florida is a small town in the panhandle of Florida. It is located about an hour and a half drive from Tampa, Florida and about two hours from Jacksonville, Florida. The population was 3,815 at the 2010 census. Oviedo is part of the Putnam County School District. The first Europeans to visit Oviedo were Spanish traders who landed in what is now Sarasota County on August 29, 1559 during their expedition under Admiral Ana de Soto looking for new routes to India. They named it "Valle del Oro" (Valley of Gold). In 1823, Captain John Dickey sailed into Sarasota Bay and discovered what he thought was a shoal of dolphins but which turned out to be a group of Seminoles led by Osceola. He named them the "Oviedo Dolphins" after his home town in Portugal where he had been born just two years earlier. Captain David Farragut used Oviedo as his base while exploring Pensacola Bay in 1837-38 before sailing upriver to Fort Myers on December 8th that year and finally landfalling at Stonington Harbor on January 12th 1840 as part of his expedition known as "F antown Campaign". The first post office opened in Oviedo on October 7th 1870. In 1903, the name "Oviedo" was changed to "Putnam", after Congressman John Witherspoon's wife Anna Brounker Putnam who served in Congress from 1923 until her death in 1943. Anna helped found most of Seminole County including Oviedo with her husband also serving as its first sheriff and county treasurer from 1889-1893; both men being instrumental early leaders within Seminole County’s community development effort during this time period when there were still no roads or electricity available anywhere near these areas today! Oviedo is a small city on the Gulf of Mexico and has been home to many notable people in its history. The town became known as "Oviedo" due to General Antonio Luna's visit there on October 6, 1821 while serving as Commander-in-Chief of Cuban forces during the Mexican–American War. On October 13th, 1824 Francisco Rivera y Salinas landed here with his squadron of 8 ships commanded by Rear Admiral José Joaquín Conchitaqué when he invaded Pensacola Bay from Yucatan Peninsula under General Agustín Burnside's orders to expel all Americans from Florida. Many important events took place during this early period including: Juan Pablo Montt's victory over Ulysses S Grant at Palo Alto; John A. MacKay's purchase and possession of land around Fort Myers; Isaac Brock sailing up Tampa Bay and founding St Petersburg; James Kenedy's purchase from Spain for $2 million near present day Tampa; Floridians voting for Andrew Jackson to be President; Captain Kidd being captured by Captain William Kidd along with his treasure when he sailed into Tampa Bay.; Santa Anna retreating southward across Lake Mariana Spanish Stations - La Guajira (1693), El Escorial (1801), Mechelen (1805), Colón (1808) In 1825 José Maria Martinez bought some land northeast of present day Oviedo which became known as Martinez Plantation after him and others associated with it such as Pedro Martínez y Valdés who had purchased adjoining land from Alonso Canseco days earlier In 1830 Manuel Gomez married Josefa Cuevas whom he had met at Mission San Juan Capistrano before she left California for Destincember 11th year old Josefa had accompanied her mother Miguelina Alcántara on her mission trip to meet Jesus Christ In 1831 Manuel Gomez built a house on lot #4 wherein he resided until his death two years later On October 25th 1840 Josue Hernandez married Margarita Alvarez about 4 miles east of where Fernandez lived next door Toña Ortiz died aged 36 months premature giving birth to twins Enrique Ortiz & Ana Ortiz born December 7th 1840 just 2 weeks shy of their 1st birthday . Sanchez married Alvarosa Mercedez about this time too late From these marriages we have 5 children: Francisco Javier Simón (born circa 1841), Mercedes Alejandra Lucia(born circa 1862), Concepcion Estefanía(born circa 1865), Aurelio Ignacio Sanchez(born c 1870) & Julia Teresa Sanchez(born 1889). In 1814, the area that is now Oviedo was founded by David Levy. The town was named after José Francisco Oviedo, who was the governor of Florida at the time. Oviedo grew slowly until it had a population of around 100 in 1848. It began to grow rapidly after Florida became an organized state in 1851 and its first county, Seminole County, was created. In 1861, Oviedo became the first city in Seminole County. On October 3rd, 1886, Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of what remained of Oviedo and killed more than 50 people.
