Oviedo, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee-St Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Oviedo comes from Spanish meaning "place where the olive tree grows." The first settlers to this area were farmers and their families who arrived in 1836. They started a post office here and named it for General José de Oviedo y Valdés, commander of Spanish forces against Seminole Indians during the Indian War of 1837-1841. At that time there were only about eighty residents living in what is now Oviedo Township. Many people moved here after they heard about fertile soil and easy access to water in nearby Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania (the original site of Tallahassee). In 1885, two brothers founded the city of Oviedo on what are now state highways 158 and 389 east of downtown Tallahassee. A few years later, an extension to state highway 431 was built which connected Oviedo with Stroudsburg via State Road 516. With increased travel between these towns and elsewhere in Florida, the city rapidly grew into one of the most important transportation hubs in Southeast Florida. Today, Oviedo's economy relies heavily on agriculture - especially citrus - as well as tourism and defense spending by local governments and private companies such as Lockheed Martin Corporation and Raytheon Missile Systems Incorporated (commonly known as Teledyne Systems Inc.). Some notable landmarks located within or near oviedoan boundaries include: Fort Walton Beach Municipal Airport - home to both US Airways Express jet service from Miami International Airport (MIA) and Bradley International Airport (BAL), as well as charter services; also used by Air Force One when visiting key military installations around SoutheastFlorida; Baptist University's John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum - features presidential archives dating back to 1917 including materials related to JFK’s Cuban exile experience; also includes Rose garden where he married Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy on November 20th1963; United States Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune - homebase for Marines fighting during World War II; Saint Augustine Cathedral – one of oldest cathedrals still standing in North America dating back over 1000 years ago

Oviedo, Florida is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 10,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oviedo was founded in 1892 by J.M.Pritchard and C.A.Frazier as a small citrus plantation named "Oviedo". The town name comes from Spanish for "place where oranges grow" and it was first called Tranquility until 1901 because of its isolated location on the Indian River Delta near Sanford and Kissimmee. In 1905, Oviedo became an incorporated municipality with a post office but no school district; it changed to its current form in 1912 when it seceded from Sanford Township and joined Polk County as one of its original townships. In 1932, the name of the town was changed again to Oviedo after General James Mizey's visit there that year (the General had been commander of US Forces Southwest Florida during World War I). After Mizey's death in 1931, his widow donated land to build a military airfield on which she also built a large home known as "The General". The first jet engine operated at this airfield on December 12, 1948 - that day made history when Captain Charles Eickenheimer flew his F4U Corsair from Tranquility Field off Cape Canaveral Air Force Station into central Miami Beach! Today, Oviedo has many successful businesses such as Citrus Express Delivery service which provides fresh produce online to homes across Central Florida daily; Southeastern Floridian Water Treatment Plant which supplies water for over 160 neighborhood residences throughout southcentral Orlando; two Baptist churches - First Baptist Church located on Southeast 2nd Street and Second Baptist Church located just east of Interstate 495 - both have their own ministries offering worship services weekdays 9am-12pm EST; four elementary schools: Middle School (grades 5 through 8), High School (grades 9 through 12), South Elementary School (grades 1 through 3), North Elementary School (grades 4 through 6); two middle schools: Covelli Middle School serving grades 7 thru 10 and West Park MiddleSchool for grades 11 thru 14; three high Schools: Northeast Highschool serving grades 9 thru 11 & Eastside Highschoolserving grades 12 thru 15; One soccer team - FC Oviedo - who play their home games at Wellesley Soccer Complex while another team played professional ball in 2019 but will be folding up shop due to lack of players
Oviedo was founded in 1836 by Captain David G. Oviedo, who purchased a tract of land from the Seminole Tribe. The town grew rapidly and soon incorporated as a city in 1853. It experienced rapid growth during the antebellum period, with an increase in population of around 100 per year. In 1861, Oviedo became the capital of Florida after Jacksonville was moved to that state from Tallahassee. The city's growth slowed during Reconstruction, but resumed somewhat following the Civil Rights Movement. As Florida transitioned into an open-ended Republican Party dictatorship following World War II, Oviedo declined in importance and fell into disfavor with many residents. However, its role as a bedroom community for Orlando has made it one of the most important localities in that city's history.
