Florida has a long and varied firearm history. The state’s first handgun was a .22 caliber rifle, which was manufactured in 1869 by George G. Smith and Company. As part of this appointment process, Cady submitted his report on “The Florida Seminoles: Their Condition and Prospect for Future Welfare” to Governor Sununsi which is now part of state law In 1938, Congress passed Publish No 13-2 entitled “An Act To Provide For Certain Changes In The Status And Procedure Of The Seminole Tribe Of Indians In Florida” This act created four new tribes within Florida – the Cherokee Nation; Miami Confederacy; Osceola Nation;and Stonington Island Tribe – effective January 1st 1939 These changes did not take into account Native American customarily using spears instead of firearms for self-defense Consequently, many unarmed Native Americans continued to use spears for protection during World War II On July 9th 1949 two gunmen entered Main Street Elementary School in Oviedo, FL shooting 10 children before killing themselves with shotguns while students were teaching an afternoon class together
