After emancipation, Oviedo returned to his native country and served as Mayor of Havana from 1884 until 1889 when he moved to Miami to become mayor again after being elected two times consecutively (1892-1894). He also served as Minister Plenipotentiary from Cuba to Spain from 1912 until 1916. In 1925 he founded what would be called "the most important citrus company in Latin America." After World War II he retired from business but continued to reside in Miami and died there on October 15th 1978 aged 97 years old The name "Oviedo" comes from José de Oviedo y Gasset's book Dona Isabel: A Romance of Spanish America (1696), which tells the story of Isabel de Guzman who travels through South America with her husband Don John II Cardenal de la Vega y Carpentier visiting some Spanish colonies before reaching Mexico City where they marry and set off for New Spain (present day Peru). Captain James Cook visited this area aboard HMS Discovery July 26 & 27 , [1773] when looking for new routes around Cape St Vincent.. Captain Anson Moody landed here Sept 11 th 1778 while exploring upper Sarasota Keys.. Captain Lawton Beamon landed here Oct 21 st 178[sic] while exploring Lower Sarasota Keys... This whole region lying between Tampa Bay & Gulf Stream had been explored by various vessels since early August [1775], when Capt Cook made landfall Trinity Reef#1 off Jupiter[ Hillsborough County]....Captain Anson Moody had just finished mapping these waters when he discovered this beautiful bay which led him baptizing it “Orlando”….He named it Fort Myers because Rear Admiral Thomas Moorehead commanded USS Constitution under Commodore Andrew Dennison during operations against Spanish Fort . This continuous exploration led eventually to settlement by people who were seeking transportation or trade routes to different parts of North America including Europe or Asia - starting with Pedro Menéndez de Avilés who established himself at what is now Orange Beach Alabama in 1693… Father Luís Viana Pinheiro came ashore here January 13 th 1700 having left Santiago del Norte… Manuel Pinto established himself alongwith his family at what is now Longboat Key… Juan Rodríguez Caballero reached us December 25 th 1700 coming downriver from New Orleans[ Hillsborough County].
