Oviedo, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 6,851 at the 2000 census. The first inhabitants of what is now Oviedo were Arawak Indians who built their villages on low hills overlooking the mouth of the St Johns River. In 1821 Spanish traders found oil wells near present-day Oviedo and began exploration; they named it "Villa Rica" (meaning "Oil Place"). The first physical settlement in what is now Oviedo was founded by Captain Manuel de la Hara on December 15, 1828 as Santa Maria dels Olivos y Hara with nine families; it became known as "Villa Rica". A fire destroyed much of this community on January 5, 1830; only about fifty people survived. In 1834 Don Crisanto de la Vega acquired 1 acre (40 m²) from Juan Pablo Baez for $1 worth of sugarcane to be used for cattle breeding purposes; he named his land La Habana where today's city stands. Development proceeded slowly due to lack of available capital until 1800 when construction began on a wharf and canal system that connected Gulfport with Pensacola Bayou. This led to increased shipping traffic through the area which required more space and also improved transportation methods so that goods could be transported long distances without having to be unloaded at various ports along the way. After many years of effort citrus processing plants were erected along Pensacola Bayou between there and Mobile Harbor making Orlando one step closer to becoming an American major metropolitan center but these endeavors failed because investors did not believe that oranges could compete with sugar cane exports from Cuba or Mexico City In 1840 John Hennepin organized an agricultural society called "La Società Agricola e Canale di Istruzione" - later renamed "Ichthys Americaes", which promoted irrigation systems in Spanish speaking countries with hopes of increasing cotton production therethroughout Latin America including Brazil; he donated 1000 acres (40 ha) east of present day Oviedo for this purpose Hennepin financed extensive farming experiments conducted by James Hogg at what is now Tallahassee before being dispatched into Indian Territory duringthe Seminole Wars In 1842 surveyor George Willard surveyed land grants near present day Oviedo for US Senator Andrew Johnson Parties line up members such as Major General Robert E Lewis to purchase these tracts during his tour throughout southern Florida during polk county fair days . When Johnson ran for President against Martin Van Buren he promised to give each voter two votes if he were elected instead OF giving all citizens one vote per $200 valuation limit set by state legislature back then ; this promise was broken but no indictments were brought against him because many believed he would have been impeached if able to implement it

It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and lies about 25 miles north-northwest of Jacksonville on Interstate 95. Oviedo was founded in 1868 by Nicholas J. Gentry as a Methodist Episcopal church and community. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its natural resources including sugarcane, cotton, citrus fruit, and lumber. In 1907 Oviedo became an incorporated city with a population of over 100 people. By 1970 Oviedo had shrunk to its present size due to various development projects which have destroyed many of its old homes and businesses. However, the efforts of local residents have preserved much of the town's history along with some interesting features such as an Old World style courthouse which has been used for civil trials since 1912.
In 1821, Spanish settlers founded Oviedo on a peninsula in the Gulf of Mexico. The town grew rapidly and by 1835 it had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1839 Oviedo was chartered as a city and within two years had an estimated population of 5,000 residents. In 1861 Oviedo became the capital of Florida and held this distinction until 1959 when Tallahassee took precedence.
